  1. I assume you are talking about the Magellan Triton 400? Are you using the Vantage point software to load caches? Unfortunately the Tritons are SLOW to load caches.
  2. The issue with the Tritons is that they do not use .gpx files like the explorist did. When loading the Triton the gpx file is converted to a different file via Vantage Point when loading the gps. When using Vantage point you can open a GPX file and send it to your device. Then close that GPX file in Vantage point and open another GPX and send that to your device. Then the waypoints/geocaches from both GPXs will be on your unit, the second one will not overwrite the first. You can keep loading until you hit the 2000 cache limit. Unfortunately all of the cache/waypoint listings go into the same database. You can't specify different GPX files like you could with the explorist anymore, everything just gets lumped together in one big library. I hope this answered your question. It takes some getting used to moving from the explorists to the tritons. I loved my explorist and all the features it had to offer. Luckily the firmware updates keep improving the tritons and they are getting better fast. Best of luck to you!
  3. I also feel that the only reason for the removal of the kml is to keep people on the gc website and promote higher ad revenue. There is already a banner ad there as well as the commission geocaching.com receives from maps purchases at mytopo.com. I would also expect to see more ads. There is nothing wrong with this, companies need to find new sources of revenue in hard times. GC.com also needs to generate money to cover resources used by the free user accounts. However, if this is the case I wish that the authorities would consider offering the kml for an additional fee. I would be happy to pay $5 a year for the use of the kml which would likely be more revenue than they would generate for the fraction of a cent they are likely receiving for each view of the banners. I hate to promote more membership tiers but I would hate to see the kml removed for good. I feel it is a definite step backwards for the sport. A lot of people like this hobby for the high tech aspect of it and Google Earth offers a lot of useful tools.
  4. I too loved the KML file. I thought it was excellent for planning long cache trips. It helped for plotting out multi's, checking cache proximity and measuring distances. I hope that it gets brought back as google earth is truly an indispensable tool and GPX files just won't cut it in cache dense areas.
  5. The way that I handle this is I first create a bookmark list of all of the caches that I have planned for my trip. I then create a Pocket Query from that bookmark list. Once the pocket query is run I open the GPX file in Google earth to view the caches I am interested in and the area. If you don't already have Google Earth you can dowload it for free. I think it's a very useful tool for plan caching trips. Hope this helps.
  6. The easiest way to do this is to create a bookmark list. After you have created the bookmark list create a pocket query based on the bookmark list so that you will get a gpx file of all the caches on your bookmark list. Next, if you don't already have it, download Google Earth. It is free and a very useful tool! In google earth you can open up the GPX file that you received from your pocket query. This will enable to you zoom and and out and get a good idea of the area! Hope this helps.
  7. I am in the process of planning a 2009 CITO event and was wondering if trail maintenance and park improvements are eligible to count as a CITO event? I've been told by a few people that it does but I haven't seen any official ruling on this, all the guidelines refer only to trash removal. Thanks for the help!
  8. That was the response I got so I guess I'll be looking around to purchase elsewhere. Maybe the link left above. I just bought four ammo cans and I'm thinking one bug each.
  9. I just used the contact page on the Groundspeak store to see if the option and discount were still available. I'll post back as soon as I get a reply from them.
  10. I second that. Four packs of the small spiral bound pads are 89 cents. Although the real geocaching log books are nice I don't think the cost is really justified.
  11. Odd. I had been to the page before and looking for it now I can't find it anymore. The link that says go 'here to pay with paypal and get discounted shipping' takes you right to the normal order page. I was hoping to order some travel bugs like this as well.
  12. I couldn't fit the stuff I carry in there, and I don't carry much. I'm pretty happy with my $9.95 hip sack from Walmart, holds 2 water bottles, gps, pda, flashlight, small first aid kit, cache maintenance kit and a little swag. Not to mention is looks cool! [i'm in denial aren't I?]
  13. I agree with Snoogans, handmade, especially hand carved. My favorite swap thus far was for a wooden salt shaker, made on a lathe with woodburning around the outside.
  14. I just made a purchase from them now and will keep everyone posted on how I make out. The prices weren't bad, 9.95 for 4, I also bought some 30 cal ammo cans and found shipping to be pretty reasonable. The web site isn't the greatest but I spoke to Angie through the website chat feature and she seemed pleasant and knowledgeable.
  15. Great pictures! Hopefully the mother isn't to upset by her smelling of human!
  16. I've seen requests like that on cache's left near golf courses where the cache was a fake golfball and several real golf balls were placed in the area to make it more difficult. So yes, I would agree with starbrand, kind of fake caches or distractions []
  17. I just received mine from geonickels.com and am very pleased. I did a lot of the design myself except for one graphic which they came up with for me. The owner's name is Mark and he was very helpful. Unfortunately I think that they are super busy and I know that he is on vacation for a couple of weeks at the moment, but it would be well worth the wait. The price was fair and can be found on the webpage along with many sample images. They are decals however, which you said you were not looking for. The quality is great though and each nickel comes in its own baggy. They will also incrementally number them for nothing if you ask. I'm very pleased and am sure I will be a repeat customer.
  18. If he's been collecting the bugs for months and managed to round up 22 bugs I don't think you can call him a newbie or use the justification that he doesn't know better. I definitely agree with the comment that if he is an upstanding cacher he would correct the issue. It's already bad enough he's had bugs in his possession that long, then to have them sit again really stinks!
  19. You sold me on that one. I am now shopping for bandanas to both take with me and leave as swag
  20. I second the M500 recomendations. I bought it off ebay for $25 shipped. It also has the SD expansion slot that you are looking for. I just use it for geocaching and at that price if something happened to it no problem, I'd just pick up another one and start over.
  21. Two obvious ones - Zip Ties & Duck Tape. Ton's of uses and work great for cache container maintenance.
  22. Two things for me: One would be I should have gone paperless from the start. I wasted so much time my first few times out printing cache pages and then shuffling through them trying to find the info I wanted. The second was starting I should have started with the premium membership. $3 a month is so little money and the amount of information you can obtain from pocket queries and route searches makes it well worth it, not to mention the GPX files are a must as they get a lot more information onto your GPSr.
