  1. i'm sorta against going the eBay route. eBay is my lifeblood, but for a wedding gift, i think it might be nice to get a brand new unit instead of a hand me down. now, buying a brand new one off eBay...that might be okay, but let's get somethin nice.
  2. Hey drpepper... got an update for us? how close are we to gettin the unit? have you decided on what unit to buy? i didn't see anywhere in the discussion where it was a definite on which unit to get. just curious.
  3. Just sent 10 bucks to gpsweddinggift@hotmail.com. Enjoy the gift, lysa. I'm a newbie myself, as I just got my GPSr a week ago, but I already know what great joy it has brought me. I hope the sport will do the same for you. Regards, Robb aka rag-a-muffin
  4. Hey all... I have a Meridian GPS (Yellow) unit, which I recently "upgraded" to firmware version 4.02. It seems that the 'chicken track' problem with the tracking feature is even worse than before. Today I was out driving around town, and was getting chicken tracks 4 and 5 lines wide on my unit. My question is, does this affect the performance of any of the unit's features, or is it just something that looks pretty stupid? I've noticed that I can zoom in and out to get the tracks cleared up into one line, but I'm just wondering if this 'chicken track' effect messes with the performance of any of the GPSr's features. Also...does the new 4.06 firmware seem to have this problem corrected? I understand 4.06 will be coming out very soon for the MeriGreen and MeriYellow. Thanks!
  5. avatars are too much fun.
  6. Hey all you administrative type people... I sent an email to logo@Groundspeak.com concerning my desire to use the Geocaching.com logo on a non-commercial signature "leave" item I want to create - in a quantity of 144. The e-mail came back to me returned without ever reaching you guys. Can someone tell me who I need to email to ask permission to use the Geocaching.com logo if the aforementioned email address isn't working??? Thanks, Dummy.
  7. I'm not very good with creating websites, but I can do some fun stuff in Adobe Photoshop. I'm a newbie, and am not a racer in this race, but I LOVE the idea. I'd be more than happy to work up a graphic that could be regularly updated on the website. In my mind, I'm picturing a map of the US, and each vehicle will have a small image which will move across the country, of course with a line behind them tracking where they've been. Email hypuractiv@aol.com if you'd like me to work on something like this. Dummy.
  8. Hey all, What's the best style of car mount for the Meridian GPS (Yellow)? The suction cup one or the swivel one? And why? Also...I've read that the swivel mount comes with all the needed "hardware", but how exactly does it mount in your car? Do you screw it into your dash or what? Just interested in the PROS and CONS of different types of mounts. thanks, Dummy.
  9. I'm looking to buy a suction cup-type car mount and a cigarette lighter/pc cable combo for the Meridian GPS (Yellow) unit. I will buy new or used. Email hypuractiv@aol.com if you've got one to sell. Also, please let me know where these items can be purchased the cheapest, besides eBay, online. Thanks, Dummy.
  10. Brand new Meridian GPS (Yellow) at outpost.com for 99 bucks.
  11. In Microsoft Streets & Trips 2002, is there any way to "lock" the pushpins into place, so that they are not able to be moved. I find that sometimes when clicking on a pushpin, I've inadvertently clicked and dragged it to a new location, which, in the world of geocaching, could be deadly. Is there any way to lock them down so they're impossible to drag to a new location? Just wondering. Dummy.
  12. nevermind...i figured it out. you said it exactly. i was trying to do too much work. i was clicking "download" and then using the "open" feature...instead of just saving the .loc file directly from the geocaching.com website. thanks!
  13. quote:Originally posted by Renegade Knight:Sure. There are loc files and there are loc files. Only open the loc file that you get from your pocket querie. Once you save a loc file with easy gps then it's a different form of loc. Alternaly (and I don't know of geobuddy does this yet) you can save a gpx file with easygps then use geobuddy to save the csv file. Wherever you go there you are. not sure i'm following here. i'm a newbie. pocket querie?? i just searched for GC's within 50 miles of my house, then checked all and downloaded to easygps. but, it was 2 webpages, so i then dragged the waypoints from the second file into the original...then saved it as a file called "50 miles from home". what is going wrong? i found where i can save it as a gpx file, but when i open the gpx file in geobuddy, it appears to be just a blank document...there are no coordinates or anything on it.
  14. just bought the Meridian GPS (Yellow) from outpost.com for 99 bucks. I'm a newbie, and so far this thing has done nothing but impress me...i'm learning all sorts of stuff, and haven't found it's limitations yet. my 2 cents.
  15. I have Microsoft S&T 2002, and am trying to convert an EasyGPS .loc file to a .csv file using geobuddy. when i'm in geobuddy, i hit file, open, and then open the .loc file, but every time i do that, i get an error that reads "Unknown Tag: 9" What gives? can someone tell me what i'm doing wrong and how i can correctly convert the .loc file to a .csv file. thanks!
  16. Hey all... I've read some posts about EasyGPS, but I still can't figure out what the heck it's good for. Can someone give me a quick rundown of what EasyGPS is used for, and whether it's worth my time or not to download and use it. Is it more trouble than it's worth? Is it a real life-saver or what? Just wanna know what it does, and some pros and cons of the whole thing. thanks, GeoRobb
  17. Could someone please explain to me the symbolic meaning of the GC.com logo? thanks. GeoRobb.
  18. Hey all you GC veterans out there, I got a question. When you stumble across a cache, what sort of items do you consider to be "great quality" items? What are some cool things to leave? On the other side of it, what are some horrible things to leave, dumb ideas, etc. I've read much about the GC'ers general dislike for McToys--and I couldn't agree more. What sort of items make great caches? What sort of items do you like to leave? Maybe you could tell me the top 10 coolest takes you've ever had, and the top 10 coolest leaves you've made. Do most of you leave a "calling card" type of leave, or just leave different things? I'm sorta leaning towards a "calling card" for my leaves...wondering what you all thought. Thanks! GeoRobb.
  19. Can someone point me to a website which explains in some detail the difference between the IEC waterproof specs? I'm wondering what the technical definitions are for all of these IEC numbers. THanks. GeoRobb
  20. quote:Since I'm so very new to the world of GPS units, could someone throw up a quick comparison of this Meridian vs. a Garmin eTrex or Garmin eMap. I think the eMap is more comparable for a comparison. Could someone please just give me a quick rundown of the two, and what they think of each of them? Thanks! Also, feel free to chime in with your own ideas of what unit(s) you think might work for me. GeoRobb ...still seeking some kind of comparison. Is the Meridian Yellow as good a deal as I think it is for $99??? ...bump
  21. brand new to geocaching, and would also love to take a look...but it's been removed...will it be back?

It has mapping, WAAS, and expandable memory. geospotter Geospotter, thanks for the help. This unit looks pretty SWEET. 23. Hey all... I'm BRAND NEW to geocaching, as I'd heard about it on tv and elsewhere, and just surfed in to the website. I've never been geocaching, nor do I own a GPS unit, but I'm already HOOKED! I'm looking to purchase my very first GPS unit. I will be using this device mainly for the purpose of geocaching, however, I think it would be nice to have a unit that I can use on road trips, etc. I need a device under $200, and under or around $150 would be even better. I'd really like to have the ability to use EasyGPS and have maps on my device, as it would be a cool addition to my on-road travelling. I've done some basic research, searching these discussion forums, and I'm leaning SLIGHTLY towards the Garmin brand devices as of now, but I'm open to anything. Can you all please give me a list of a couple of devices that will do what I want for not too much money? Thanks! GeoRobb. P.S. - Second question: If I were to buy a GPS device for the SOLE purpose of geocaching and forgetting about having maps on the unit, what units would you go for? I still like the idea of being able to use EasyGPS with my unit, though. This is sorta my plan B approach...please help.
