  1. Try formating the card itself that may help. I just uploaded all of City Nav 8 to my 2 gig card and it took up 1.6 gigs worth of space. It could be that sectors of the card are bad and that will limit your space as well. You best bet is too hook it up to a computer with out the GPS and see what the computer tells you. If all else fails return the card and get a new one.
  2. You are incorrect. I am new to this entire thing gps/geocaching I had an explortist 400 for about 3 weeks and i played with it and all the software extensively...i also read through the manual with great painstaking detail. After playing with their geocaching manager and playing with easy gps and gsak i found i liked the latter two better for many many many reason. But mostly ease of use and the information that you can automatically generate and not have to manually input.
  3. I know that %cryp will upload the encrypted hitn to the gps, but how do you upload the decoded hint? Its not in the help file or in the gsak forums thanks
  4. Maybe I am too bold for my own good, but i don't worry about muggles unless the area is sensitive (ie grave yard, church, etc). If some one wants to question me i have brochures about geocaching in my back pack and i can easily explain what i am doing. I have actually had people drive by me really slowl before while looking for a cache that was near the road...eventually i just stared back and they kept moving. My feeling on it is...i am on public property and i am not doing anything wrong. If you have a problem with that its your problem not mine. If you want to call the cops on me please do and maybe i'll get another person hooked on geocaching.
  5. I have used the explortist 400 bumdled geocaching manager and honestly it stinks...i had better luck with gsak, easygps, but mostly i just used the mapsend software for it. Map send does pretty well with it, but easygps and gsak will upload more information about the cache to your gps
  6. With the lithium batteries thing: I have found that in the setup screen you can tell it you are using lithium ion batters and it does fine. I use the engergizer lithium batteries and it lasts forever. Your best bet would be to call garmin about it though.
  7. also NT also is supposed to be able to use traffic monitoring based on the gps unit capabilities.
  8. as many other have said...that is a VERY painful way to geocache
  9. While reading a different post by Centex in the GPS 101 thread it made me wonder, what myths are there about GPS units? Being new to the entire GPS/geocaching world i don't know what the myths are and i am curious as to what the community has come across and how these myths got started. I assume most myths are due to lack of experience with GPS units and navigation in general.
  10. yeah city nav 8 is very nice and well worth the money...there are many combo packs out there that include city nav 8 and a car adapter and mounts etc. ANY GPS is not being used to its full potential with out a mapping program i would also recomend a 1-2 gig micro SD card...with a 2 gig card you can put the entire city nav 8 north america detail on the card and have room left over. 1617.2 mb...and that is awsome.
  11. I believe its because the magellan units use an average...i am sure someone more learned than i on the subject will post explaining the difference.
  12. i had an explorist 400....a family member had a 60csx. I took both units geocaching and here is what i found. Both units will do what you want. Both units require extra software to be fully functional (mapsend for magellan, mapsource for garmin). Both units will get you to the cache (garmin was a bit more accurate) Both units are very nice. I sold my Magellan 400. The garmin 60csx is over all a better unit. As i said they both will do the job, but the 60csx does it so much better. The auto routing is a dream and the POI database that comes with the mapsource city nav is great. The interface of the units is different so if you are used to the magellan interface it will take a bit to get used to the garmin. Add the superiority of the Sirf III chip in the garmin 60csx and the fact that their cistomer service is top notch and you have a unit that is simply amazing for geocaching, for driving, for badically any of your GPS needs. Yes everyone i am a convert =D
  13. City Navigator all the way...1 it seems like its the best mapping product garmin offers and 2. it seems better suited for what you looking for.
  14. They are ok, but if i remember correctly you cannot hook them up to a computer nor can they accept external memory. So what you see is what you get, no added detail, just a base map and GPS coordinates etc. If it suites your needs you will be fine, but if you are looking for more advanced features you may want to look at an explortist 210 or above or even a garmin of some type.
  15. Also the Highway screen on the 60csx is VERY nice and can help you to have an at a glance whats next...and on the 60csx there is a screen that will give you the turn by turn description and hides the previous steps so you can look at that screen and know that in X miles you need to make a turn.
  16. Another question....other than topographical info does Topo USA have any advantages? In other words would i get anything beneficial from TOPO USA other than topographical info that i wouldn't have gotten from City Nav?
  17. You can start with one or the other Tutorial on making custom maps. After a while you either get hooked and join the Map Authors Yahoo group, or you get frustrated, kick the dog and spend $100+ on maps that are worse quality than you could produce yourself (if you could only figure out how). You are allowed to do this without kicking your dog, but you have at least to shout some profanity at your spouse or (in case you have none) your neighbor. Or you can check on Mapcenter if someone who got hooked earlier already made free maps for the area you're interested in. Jan Much thanks i will check that out....since i dont ahve a dog or a spouse how about i kick the stray cat while cursing the random birds that fly by and bite the head off a fish?
  18. how would you make your own to install on the 60csx?
  19. I had the 400 but sold it and got the 60csx...the 60csx is a much better unit and is more accurate, has more features, and is all around great. I liked my 400 it was ok, but it wasn't what i expected. However i do like mapsend a bit better than mapsource.
  20. I have city navigator, which is very nice, but i do like having topographical i was thinking about getting getting Topo USA, but i have heard lots of bad things about it. Can i get some of your opinions? Thanks
  21. The 76Cx doesn't support road avoidence. For the units that do, I don't think the avoidence areas you set up in mapsource get transfered to the gps, you would have to set up the same avoidences in the unit as well. I have noticed, on the 60cxs any ways, that if you just drive past where it tells you to turn or go it will at first find a place for you to u-turn, if you bypass that it will create a whole new route based upon the road you chose.
  22. xer0 your such a trouble maker your review is very nice and you really will help new users understand things about their unit. Thanks
  23. also the energizer lithium ions do really well with elctronics. I have had a piece of equipment that on normal batteries last 12-14 hours, but on the energizer lith ion last 20-24. Worth a shot if you dont want to go rechargeable. These batteries are a tad more expensive though.
  24. I recently got a garmin 60csx and i wannted to know if you can get an extended warranty for it. I looked on the garmin website, but could not find anything. I know that magellan offers this so i would hop garmin does too. Thanks,
  25. I have a magellan explorist 400 and i recently accidentally purchased a garmin 60csx (loooooong story) so needless to say i am selling my 400 now....great unit, but i do like the garmin a bit better.
