  1. Okay, now that you've got me curious.... how, exactly, do nano's degrade the sport and experience? Just a friendly word of advice. Don't answer this unless you have a lot of time and patience. <Thinks of some of the other threads with Mushtang's wonders of clarifications.....>
  2. As I found out this past weekend,it's a good thing for you and your buddy to do while looking for brooks and rivers to fish in that aren't raging from snowmelt.
  3. Honestly,if I had read the forums before placing my first cache,I still would have placed it.But I would have used a five gallon pail instead of a military first aid container.Mostly because of all the camo tricks I learned here, and it's in and area that I wouldn't need to use a 'Pointy object' to make a hole for it... There's a question you should ask yourself(Not the OP but in general)- "If I read the forums before I placed my first cache, would I have still placed it?" Not that the forums are the ultimate last word in the geocaching community, but because there's a ton of information from experienced cachers here for the noobie to grow off of.
  4. I wouldn't waste my money on a rhino. As long as everyone has a GPS and a radio, you can tell the other members your coords and they will know where you are.I showed my buddy and his brother how to do that while hunting in Maine and it worked out without spending 300+ per man. Just sayin'.
  5. Perhaps your map datum is in correct?Check to make sure it's on WGS 84.Sometimes they do get screwy just because...the weather or whatever. My 60cs sometimes jumps around and such just because. Also may want to check your batteries.GPSr's sometimes act stupid when they get on low or old batteries.I should know,I have a Garmin II,V and a 60cs.
  6. I'm just glad I didn't waste my money.
  7. 5782mi in Ramadi Iraq. Wish I could've done some more while I was there.
  8. My Atlas shoes have strap bindings too, but their design is much better than the Tubbs strab bindings. The Atlas straps are nice because they work as well with bulky Sorel style boots as they do with hiking boots or trail shoes. When I started I used the old wood/rawhide shoes. I paid laround $100 for them. I think they were made by Green Mountain Snowshoes. Anyway, I used them for about 10 years, then sold them at a garage sale for $50 bucks. Not too shabby. I remember the bindings were leather and pretty sucky. I eventually replaced them with neoprene bindings I bought from LL Bean. A minor improvement. THey didn't have crampons either. Going up and downhill took some work. I didn't know what I was missing at the time, but since I've used shoes with built in crampons I'd never go back. This past weekend myself and my buddy and his girlfriend went rabbit hunting on snow shoes. You're not kidding about those Tubbs bindings. That was the first thing he said to me as we headed out."They're nice shoes, but they loosen up alot."Sure enough he was messing with them about one hundred yards from the truck.Hers didn't seem to loosen much.I didn't get a chance to try them, however they looked like they were doing good when they stayed on.From a hunting standpoint, they did seem to make more noise than my wood/rawhide bear paws, mainly because of the crampons. That was solely because we had a warm spell followed by negative temps which make a crust on the snow and make walking with shoes super loud. But performance wise he was walking with much better traction than I was.Just wanted to mention this to anybody looking at a set of Tubbs.Great shoes but the binding suck.
  9. Yup,the leather bindings weren't the greatest.Neoprene is the way to go with wooden shoes.I like em.I'm a nostalgic guy, what can I say? Not to say I'd never try a pair of the new ones.Heck you guys in this forum already got me liking those collapsable trekking poles. Now THOSE are the cat's behind!
  10. I'm willing to bet I'm the only guy in this forum that still uses wood and rawhide shoes.I've got a pair of new Bear paw shoes from Cabela's.Great for tight woods and deep powder, but the things are so wide I had to walk bow legged in them.So my neighbor had a pair of green mountain style shoes that are I'm guessing 30 years old.A set of new bindings and they're just the thing.I use mine for Hiking, hunting and strapped to my snowmobile. What'd you think I was going to say?I use Tubbs?
  11. On the way to Liquid Sky #444.This cache is on the AT/LT in Vermont. One of my best fishing spots is at the trailhead from the road/parking area in the town of MT.Tabor.If anybody is passing through the area of Rt.7 from Dorset north to Wallingford, this is a highly recommended cache. On the trail- Little Rock Pond(Where the cache site is after the hike)-
  12. Welcome back home! Thanks TL. On another note,I still need to finish our magnesium firestarting challenge.
  13. You'd think after 28 months in Iraq eating them for lunch almost eveyday I'd get tired of them. Yeah,I'm not. Mail em here if you don't need em.
  14. I just checked out the sample.Looks alright to me,but as with 100% of magazines I read,my suggestion is less advertizements and more content(Or less pages).
  15. Wow!Great pics guys.Been a little busy with hunting season and all. Thanks for keeping the thread going.
  16. If there's one thing I've learned with knives, size is meaningless compared to application and sharpness. But it's fun to carry around a big one to get looks.
  17. Magnus: "These guys have been going in the wrong direction for days. I'm tired of eating mud, I want a milkbone, damnit. Screw them, I'm done with this wilderness crap. I'm going back to the car." Not to poke fun at others' misfortunes, but .
  18. One thing I can take away from these forums is something of a guideline I made up for myself.I want to get logs such as 'thanks for bringing me to this place/area",or "we wanted/I wanted my 1000th/200th/50th cache to be a vtmtnman cache." Those,I've decided, will be my hiding guidelines.I get what you're saying though.Strive for excellence/perfection.
  19. Heh... Log by Cacher for The Ark of the Covenant cache- Found Ark ok after a small search.Muggles were nearby, but vaporized after opening cache.Left sig item, repented, and signed stone log. TFTC This was one of two today. After here we went on to the Holy Grail cache.Muggle was there ahead of me,he chose poorly.I chose wisely. Left Grail, took everlasting life. TFTC
  20. Oh Snoogans...How do you do it? Originator of the ODS Prime masterpiece, smashed penny maker, and now spreading thy wisdom from highly effective people to make highly effective cachers. I believe the REAL question here is when will the book signing be?
  21. Nah no Ocean use.Mostly because we're a landlocked state.
  22. Would you LEAVE already? We've been waiting for you to stop posting... and start posting stateside for DAYS! michelle But I like making everyone wait! vtmtnman
  23. One day...Although I'll let you in on a secret... Restock a Charter member's cache with swag and geocoins,or plead you case over in the Platinum member forums. Neither is a sure bet,but you may get lucky.Just don't end up Rusty Aluminum members like me and BR....
