  1. I suspect not too many where you could truly say "just a given" unless they have published a specific policy to that effect. But in general if it is public land, it is reasonable to "assume" permission unless the land manager or agency has a specific policy. Some sure-fire clues that it is NOT a "given" are signs like "unlawful to leave marked trails" or "sensitive geological/botanical area" or "geocachers will be shot." Is there a "QBQ?" (Question behind the question) When I first started I was anxious to place a cache or two and I felt like all the cool places were taken. Indeed cache density was much less in those days. i imagine a newbie now finds it even more frustrating. Add to that the perceived "hassle" of asking permission and it seems like newcomers can't participate in the hiding, at least not in any way beyond the lame. Actually, I have found that asking permission isn't really that hard once one finds out who is in charge of a given land. You should routinely do so BEFORE you go to the trouble of finding that ideal hiding spot. This will minimize your disappointment if the answer is "no." As to "what are those areas," I think you have the proverbial cart in front of the horse. It will be much better in general to find a cool place and THEN determine if permission is needed rather than just go place a cache somewhere the primary reason that you picked the location being that you didn't need to get permission. there is always a qbq!!!! Thanks for bringing it up. I recently placed a cache 100 ft from a cemitary and the publisher wanted more information on the cache before he would list it, but he did not list why he wanted more information on the cache, he just said can you please tell me a little more about the area the cache is in? -mrbeachroach
  2. Are there any public places that are just a given that you do not need permission to start a cache here? If so what are these areas.
  3. Just curious to what is used to check out the land, and some tips and tricks publishers use to post new caches or deny them. I would like to use them to get ideas about cache placement.
  4. Here is my latest tb mission idea, I have went through about 5 phones in the 2 years and about 8 phone chargers. Everythime one breaks, I get someone elses old phone, then I have to get a charger from b.p. becacuse they are the only ones that fit. They dont sell them any more at the cell phone stores. The ones at b.p. only last about 3 months, then they die. They are supposed to honor a 1 year gaurentee according to the box, but Iv went round and round the mulberry bush with the little owner there. So instead of me throwing away these crapy phones and chargers in our landfills, im going to collect them all by drilling them together and chaining them somehow, and the travlebugs goal is going to be to reach china, and to be thrown into thier landfill. On the way I will request that each person adds their old phones and chargers, the person who finally reaches china, and takes pictures of the phones going to their landfills or dump will recive a special mystery coin of my choice, and will hopefully encourage them to stop making defective devices if we keep sending it back to where it came from. I would also encourage any parents who have a lead recall toy to do the same thing with thier useless toys.... -mrbeachroach.
  5. The part about getting an ancient one for 10 or 20 bucks is that you won't panic so much when you drop it in a beaver pond or smash it on a rock while you are out caching. I wouldn't get an "ancient" Palm. Look on eBay for a "like new" Palm m500. It can take an SD card and connects to your computer with USB, something that is important. There is no point in purchasing an old Palm for $10.00 and then finding out the Serial to USB adapter is going to cost $39.99 . . . I have had my Palm m500 for more than six years. The battery is still going strong and in nearly three years of using it with Cachemate installed, have never had a problem with it. I got an inexpensive hard case to protect it from the inevitable rigors of caching. You should be able to get a Palm m500, with the cradle, and including the shipping, for less than $30.00. To get the information into my Palm, I use GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife). I haven't had to print out a cache page ever since I started caching "paperless." It is the only way to go . . . :)great advise thank you!!!
  6. Good call on the ink, I have a magellen meridian color gpsr, do you see any combatibility issues with this?
  7. I can't say they're the best way to go, but they work for sure; and yes you get logs, hints and descriptions. And to be totally obnoxious, I should point out they haven't been called "palm pilots" since 1997. Assuming that's the way you want to go after this is discussed, do you have one already? You can buy an ancient used one off of Ebay for $10-$20, and they work just fine for caching. I love the totally obnoxious part, thanks!! I don't have one, but when I get one what would be the benifit of not getting one that is ancient? What do I have to look out for in buying an old or used one? Software? wires?
  8. Wow that makes me feel good, took me 9 months, It was my goal to hit it by dec31st
  9. I had a good one just 2 days ago in Alabama, went there and we were bushwacking down a hill off trail, 8 ft slate rock nice and flat at a slant with some leaves on them, the moist leaves gave out and I did a 180 and landed on all 4's knees 1st then wrist, hips and ankles!!! I was to excited to stop, I waited about 10 seconds to regain reality then took off again. It felt like I was bleeding but I knew if I looked Id want to give up and go back to the car. 4 hours later looking at it it was pretty minimal, but it hurt like #!;; !!!!!!!!
  10. Got number 100 today, statisticly I think this means that Im addicted, and it might stick right?
  11. Im interested to taking my caching to the next step, can any of you all convince me that palms are the best way to go? Whats the benifits and how convienant is it? Do you save paper and can you get all the logs and hints ,descriptions with it?
  12. I like the Idea of a boomerang coin that goes out, achives and then gets put into its collection
  13. What do you think of a Mystery cache along the interstate, where you leave a sheet of adress lables, that people have to take and when they get home or where ever they are going they have to send you a postcard from thier hometown or favorite place they travled, to get credit for the cache? Mabey they would have to send it with thier geocaching screen name on it and when I recive it I would contact them that they could log the find? also mabey at the end of each month I could pic my favorite postcard and send that geocacher a special signiture swag or prize, for as long as the cache exist? what do you all think? what should I name this new cache?
  14. So whats your vote and Opinion. Do you have your own stash of Geocoins? Or do you see a coin more having more value, being out in the field working for you? Do you consider a coin part of your collection if you realase it with a mission, or only the ones you horde up in a protective container unactivated? What do you think? I have coins know and they are great and cool, I don't know what to do with them!!!!!! Help!!!! Keep em?, or Send them?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. I would say it doesn't really matter the mission, but the opportunity to see a cool coin! I would add a simple mission however. Example, "To visit every U.S. State," "To travel to GCXXXX, and back to _____.," or "To meet as many new cachers as possible!" Those all work. Also: DO NOT KEEP ME! Thanks to you all I think I got it now
  16. A couple of questions about new geocoin missions. Do you give the geocoin a mission without drilling a hole through it? By designating the mission online or does this leave the coin more likely to be taken? If you have an already activated coin that you traded with someone else how do you change its mission? Thanks. Jason.
  17. Hey mrbeachroach! If I understand correctly, you want to do a cache located at Nxx Wxx and have, basically, a stage, located within 500'? You can put your own stages at any distance from your own cache, they just need to be .1 mile (528 feet) from other geocachers cache stages. So in keeping with the direction I think you're wanting to go . . . Place your stage at your coordinates and set up as a standard cache. Add 'Additional Coordinates' and label one as a 'Clue' and allow it to be seen by all. In your description, explain that the cache is at the coordinates and that the additional coordinate is a 'Clue' if needed. That sound about right? Sounds like fun. Cache On! JohnTee So the 500 ft rule does not apply to your own multi cache stages even when being aproved by the publisher? Meaning I can have a multi with all stages withen 200 ft of each other?
  18. O.K let me exlplain. My 2 evil stages of this multi blend in so good with the surroundings that Im not sure if people will find them, going out on a 4 part multicache that last 2 hours and getting a dnf would not be fun. So should I put pictures of the 2 evil cache containers uploaded to the gallerys part of the cache listing? After all we want geocachers to find them. 1 of my evil caches is a long thick stick that is cut in half that contains a 1\4 inch hole with the cords to the 2nd location. Just looks like another stick in the woods.
  19. I can see the delima here. I have a mantality that pretty much anything goes, but if the state park has TP balled up around a tree, it would definatly cause problems. Its best to take that creativity and just make a better cache. If you work in the pubic waste system and this cache is at the dump then now were talking buisness. Or mabey the beaches of Bullixi Missippi.
  20. Remember, he gets to keep one coin for himself for putting on this coin contest. I took care of the donated coin so all coins could go back out to everyone who ante'd up!! GREAT to see a fellow Michigander took the kitty, but all were deserving! MrB...did you get the coins I sent you yet?? Hope you like them and it was my pleasure! MERRY CHRISMAS all...and CONGRATS UsYoopers!!! Gottem, thanks so much and God bless all!!!
  21. actually there were only 9 players before I cut the contest off. I am giving all the coins to usyoopers. We modified the contest half way through.
