  1. I apologize for kinda of cross posting, but since this thread seems to have somehow missed the thread from like last week on the same thing, I'll repost my post MWUAHAHAHAHA!!!.... In "the other" GPSr thread I posted this.... I'm going to stick my neck out here and be a dissenter amongst the group. Personally it sounds a little ridiculous for some reason to refer to their device as "my GPS" because the acronym GPS is used to define the "system" not end-user device. Saying "my GPS" is like saying you have your own personal set of satellites for global positioning. Now if anyone here does then I fully endorse your use of GPS sans "r" s A GPS receiver is used to access _THE_ GPS. So it is not in any way redundant. The lower case "r" in GPSr is used because GPS... "Global Positioning System" is a proper name... like the "Internet" (Upper case "I"), while the "r" in receiver is not proper. So, even though the "r" is part of an acronym a case change is used to delimit the proper name from the non-proper word in the acronym. I fully admit that this is picking all kinds of nits.... but being a techie, and often technical writer this kind of thing drives me bonkers. I know... I'm a geek -FlatLander
  2. I've got a couple of FRS units that my wife and I use when out skiing to keep track of each other and occasionally while caching. I was curious though if there is an "official" etiquette for FRS usage. I use radios at work frequently to communicate with other staff and use the 10xx codes, radio call sign numbers, etc. Is similar usage appropriate when using FRS? -FlatLander

  4. I was hiking through the mud this weekend and found myself munching on some supremely satisfying oreos. I must say... there are few things better to hike with than a big bag of doublestuffs. Anyway... what does everyone pack for those ever recurring I-Just-Hiked-Four-Miles-For-This-$^#**@-Cache-And-I-Didn't-Eat-Lunch munchies? 8. I was in no way trying to insult Communism, Russians, or other eastern Europeans. I was mearly poking fun at my own country's past "requirements" for being a valued citizen in the community. "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." -George Burns
  9. I agree that it adds to the challenge by not listing required gear. However, I there are a lot of people who overestimate their skill and underestimate the danger when it comes to climbing. Personally, I would list that gear may be required just to prevent some moron from attempting it not realizing that gear should be used. As much as I'd like to think I wouldn't feel guilty about some numbskull injuring themselves... I would. "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." -George Burns

  11. As long as you specify that gear will be needed on the cache page, and post an appropriate rating I say go for it. You might want to include anchor making options at the location if you want to be nice. BTW "rappelling" has two "p"s "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." -George Burns

  16. I was just curious how a rating get's assigned to a particular thread? Is this simply an administrator deciding how good a topic is, or is there some quantiative process for rating? "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." -George Burns
  17. Just to clarify a couple of technical problems.... 1) While it is true that every website has an IP address, every website does not necessarily have a UNIQUE IP address. Virtual hosting allows a webserver to use one IP for many many domains. Depending on how the webserver is configured, or how you setup your cache, people could get different sites for the same IP. 2) IP's change. Thus the primary reason for DNS. IP changes are more common than you might realize, especially with the rate that telecom co.'s are going out of business these days. I'm not trying to shoot down your idea. Just wanting to make sure you don't go through a lot of work to have something change and you have to do it all over again. "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." -George Burns
  18. It's very simple for me... as related to geocaching (this is a geocaching forum right?) I get annoyed with reminders of the outside world when I've purposefully enganged myself in an activity that get's me out of that world. When I go hiking or caching or biking, it is generally to get away from the city, and more importantly, from people. Seeing a butt, or smelling cig smoke while on the trail jars me out of my happy, nature induced state of pseudo-bliss faster than just about anything. I don't hate smokers, I just hate the smokers that ruin my hike. "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." -George Burns
  19. I love my Vista... however my old high school is one block from Garmin's Headquarters so I might be a bit biased "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." -George Burns

  21. This whole thread reminds me of the song "Jesus in a bottle" by the Dead Milkmen. Replace "bottle" with "geocache"... bingo... new hit single. "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." -George Burns
  22. quote:I know Petzl is the "big name", and they are a big presence at caving conventions. However, I consider them EXTREMELY overpriced, usually running 50-100% more than similar products!!! I can't imagine why anyone would ever buy one. While I agree that you are paying for a "name" with petzl products, they are quality. I paid ~$25 for my Tikka and don't think that unreasonable at all. I have a few bits of Petzl gear on my climbing rack too. While those items can get pricey, they have well made items that other manufactures don't offer (yet) "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." -George Burns
  23. The Tikka by default emitts a very bright white.. almost bluish light. I believe they do offer colored lenses for that model in red, amber and green. "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." -George Burns
  24. I've also got a Petzl Tikka. Love it. "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." -George Burns
