  1. Ok, not to get too graphic here, but how did he get through the bone? I'm hoping the bone was broken into two (or more) pieces and that he didn't have to saw through it... Happy Hunting! ~ bcj19
  2. I bought my Garmin GPSMap 76 from Amazon.com about a year ago. At the time, they had the best price I could find, and they still do. Happy Hunting! ~ bcj19

  4. Having had this conversation with you, I am now a better man. Thanks for the info. Happy Hunting! ~ bcj19
  5. With a risk of sounding uneducated... Can someone please tell me who/what "Markwell" is? Happy Hunting! ~ bcj19
  6. ....But I would much rather discuss the topic of asking land owners/managers for permission to place caches on their land. My $0.02 worth: If it's possible to contact the owner/manager, you should contat the owner/manager before placing the cache. If nothing else, it's a common courtesy. (I don't suppose you would be pleased if I hid a cache in the bushes under your living room window without first asking permission.) Happy Hunting! ~ bcj19
  7. PC interface cable with cigarette lighter adapter They also make an "open ended" cable that can be hard-wired into your DC power system... Power/data cable Happy Hunting! ~ bcj19
  8. Garmin GPSMap 76 Data/Power Cables Is it possible to connect BOTH an external power cable AND a data cable to the Garmin GPSMap 76 at the same time? Since they both plug into the same spot on the back of the unit, I was hoping I could find a converter of some nature that would allow me to do this. I've been using my GPSr with Street Atlas USA 2003 on a laptop for navigation, but on long trips I blow through batteries in the GPSr (I have DC power for the laptop). I know, I could just disconnect the data cable from the GPSr and plug in the power cable, but then I wouldn't be connected to the laptop. Right now, I get one or the other, but I want both! I firmly believe that I can not only have my cake, but I can eat it too! Thanks for any help! Happy Hunting! ~ bcj19

  12. If you have a cable modem (or other broadband connection), you might want to look into dynamic hosting services such as Dynamic DNS. Also, I saw someone mention forums in an earlier post... If you're interested in hosting your own forum (very similar to the Groundspeak forums), check out Snitz 2000. It is a FREE download that runs on Access, MySQL and MSSQL7/2000. You can check it out and/or download the pages from the previous link, or you can see the site I've set up by following this link. By the way, the site is coded using Active Server Pages. Good luck... Happy Hunting! ~ bcj19
  13. Is it just me, or do all conversations eventually return to the topic of 'doot'??!?!!? Happy Hunting! ~ bcj19
  14. Again, thanks to everyone for your input. It sounds to me like there is a potential "market" for this type of information. As a result, I've spent some time working on building a site for the sole purpose of collecting and reporting the average deviation from the coordinates of a posted cache site and the coordinates reported by the geocachers that have visited the site. Based on this deviation, "new" coordinates for the cache site will be calculated and displayed. You can view this site (as somewhat of a work-in-progress) by visiting the following URL: http://bcj19.homeip.net/gps Before anyone says anything, I do realize that this information is trivial, at best, and that all GPS readings are approximations and can be affected by any of a number of outside forces (see Poindexter's previous post...5th from top, I think). That said, any questions, comments, etc would be greatly appreciated. Happy Hunting! ~ bcj19 PS: The Face... You're close, but that's not a Golden. He's a Vizsla (aka Hungarian Pointer).
  15. Thank you, everyone, for your input. I think Poindexter hit the nail on the head in his description of all the variables that come into play when our GPS units calculate a specific location. Logscaler, on the other hand, was also dead on in his (her) description of what I am interested in accomplishing. That said, I like the way Eraseek thinks... It might be a waste of time, but the information (however practical or impractical) could be of a basic trivial interest to many people. http://bcj19.homeip.net/gps Happy Hunting! ~ bcj19
  16. logscaler... Thanks for the info, but that's not quite what I had in mind. I am more interested in comparing the coordinates displayed by my GPS unit at various cache sites with the coordinates reported by others at the same cache sites. For example... Suppose that I track down a cache that has been posted at N39 15.587 W094 30.050 and when I get there, my GPS unit reads N39 15.589 W094 30.049. I'm wanting to compare MY coordinates with what others get when they visit the exact same cache site. In the above example, there is a deviation of N0 0.002 E0 0.001. (My coordinates are slightly NE of the posted coordinates.) If this still doesn't make sense, check out this link that shows a web page I've thrown together to help illustrate what I'm getting at: http://bcj19.homeip.net/gps/gps2.asp I hope this makes sense. 17. This one is near the Kansas City International airport. It's just off of I-29 to the south of the airport on Tiffany Springs Pkwy. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=49262 Happy Hunting! ~ bcj19
  18. In the short time I've been involved with geocaching, I've often wondered how accurate my GPS readings are. I know that this is not an exact science and that there are many outside factors that can infulence the readings we receive from our GPS units. However, when I locate a geocache site, I tend to wonder what coordinates other geocachers get at the exact same location. Is anyone else ever curious about this? I was thinking about building a web page to track this info and provide the average deviation from the posted coordinates of a geocache site and the coordinates posted by the geocachers that have found the site. Would something like this be of interest to anyone, or would I be wasting my time? Any feedback is appreciated. Happy hunting! ~ bcj19
