Geocaching is much more convenient if you have a premium membership. Favorite points, Bookmarks and Custom coords (stil improvable) are very useful to me. Many external mobile apps and programs basically requite the Live-API or Pocket Queries. If you search only one or two geocaches a month you probably won't need it.

If you find just a TFTC (sometimes also replaced by +1) in a log this also can mean that this cache was not found worth a real log entry.

Hallo Zappo, man kann natürlich auch mit wenigen einen Chat machen. Nur wenn dann vielleicht außer uns eine oder zwei weitere Personen interessiert wären und davon nachher eine bis keine am Chat teilnimmt bzw. Fragen beisteuert, dann ist es evtl. sinnvoll den Chat zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt zu veranstalten, wenn und falls wichtigere Fragen aufkommen. (Z.B. durch Umstellungen auf der Website oder neue Funktionen, Regeln etc.) Es hängt jetzt auch nicht allein an diesem Forum. Natürlich gibt es auch Ankündigungen bei den Niederländern und auch im deutschen Groundspeak Forum. Viele Grüße vom SKAMS

Zum Zeitpunkt der Gründung war sicherlich keine zahlende Menge von Premium Mitgliedern vorhanden. Und die Tatsache, dass man Chef ist, heißt nicht automatisch dass man zu viel Geld bekommt. (Sei es nun teuer oder nicht) Ich habe aber schlicht keine Ahnung wieviel die Groundspeak Chefs verdienen, hoffe aber das es genug ist, damit sie die Site weiter betreiben und auch nicht auf die Idee kommen Groundspeak weiterzuverkaufen. Noch kurz zum angekündigten Chat: Momentan sieht es so aus, dass Robert die Sache aufgrund der schwachen Resonanz wohl eher ausfallen lassen möchte. Ich gebe dann noch rechtzeitig Bescheid.

Geocaching.com obviously has a problem displaying "solved" mysteries on the big map. Those geocheckers that already exist are indeed good enough. My intention was to let Groundspeak directly "know" that a user has solved a mystery. Once for optimizing the map display and later maybe when the coordinates are corrected/moved by the owner at some time.

We own and use an E-trex Vista Hcx. The most notable different to a Legend Hcx is that the Legend does not have a compass. This may take some time to get used to when you cached with an android (with compass) before. Second as already stated. The E-trex Legend/Vista do not support paperless caching. Although both support micro-sd cards (with up to 4gb I think) they can not directly read GPX-Files from it. Geocaches: Basically: Using the web-interface to transfer caches from geocaching.com Using the Garmin Windows Software (i.e. Basecamp). Some other Platforms (Mac/Linux) maybe be supported by "GPSBabel" or other tools. You enter waypoints(=caches) by hand on the device and navigate to them. Those caches are limited in number (I think about 1000) and only show GC-Code and position. A treasure chest represents the cache (regardless of its type) on the map. Those caches can be marked as "visited". Logging/Fieldnotes is not supported (As far as I know). Using additional tools like GAPP or GSAK (+macro) you can export Geocaches as "POIs". This will allow the etrex to hold about 10000-20000 (display gets slower the more geocaches you put on the device) caches + waypoints. Those tools also allow to use the real cache name, and add informations like cache icon, size, terrain/difficulty, hints (limited) and additional waypoints. As the text per waypoint is limited to about 80-100 characters there would be no place to add the cache listings, logs, or even images. The disadvantage of the POI-Method is that those caches/POIs can not be marked as visited on the device. (At least I know no method to do it) Maps: The limit for the a map file is 2GB. Those map files are not switchable on the device itself but a single map file may contain selected tiles of maps around the world (although I only tried out adjacent tiles so far). These map tiles can be selected with the windows tools BaseCamp or MapSource from garmin. Those tools can then create the map file which can be moved on the device. Maps are available free based on Openstreetmaps (OSM) for nearly all over the world. Sometimes as ready made mapfile (gmapsupp.img) or as installable exe for the use with BaseCamp & MapSource. The may also exist web services for downloading selected OSM map tiles around the world. So you can try to have one map with different tiles or move/rename the map files on the micro-sd card with a different device (smartphone, pc+card reader etc.) You see, for reasonable comfortable use it is not so simple. You may however just prepare a caching tour by manually entering the waypoints and use the device to navigate to them.

Some (not all!) letterboxes on geocaching.com are also well findable without GPS. You may need a compass though, but often a functional toy compass will suffice to roughly tell the direction.

To be able to place the logbook back in the container (after noticing it is full) it is advisable to learn the art of origami first.

Sorry for bringing up such an old thread. But I just wanted to bring up this suggestion (some aspects are similar to niraD's post). Summary: ======== Integrate a geochecker in Groundspeak. At least optional. Advantages: #1 Less performance issues when corrected coords are shown on map (at some time in the future). #2 User does not has to solve a puzzle again or re-input the custom coords when an owner moves the container. Explanation for #1: Most certainly Groundspeak has a global cache database optimized for the fast map display of geocaches. Perhaps the coordinates are optimized/grouped into tiles. Not graphical tiles like on google maps but a similar structure/hierarchy would make sense. Such methods usually do not easily allow to integrate user-individual coordinates. But the final coordinates of mysteries and also multis are known to Groundspeak. They may anyhow normally not be revealed. If a users custom coordinates are verified equal to the stored final coordinates then Groundspeak could access them in a similar optimized (but filtered) way from a global database. Explanation for #2: This is obvious. For me the time between solving and actually finding a mystery varies between days and months. If the owner has moved/corrected the cache coordinates after I have set the custom coords, I usually won't notice. With a verified final coord Groundspeak could automate this. OK, this won't work if the original cache was archived and newly listed. I hope this was understandable. My English is surely not perfect.

Changing just the icon would indeed be much easier on the technical side (same is already done for the found icons) but this would be incomplete und could be mistaken. But you're right. We have to go and catch'em all!

If the Phone has GPS and the ability to install custom java applications then Trekbuddy would be a possibility. http://www.trekbuddy.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page There's no guarantee though. Incompatibilities may happen. For beginners Trekbuddy is perhaps not so intuitive. But it is a nice tool to work with GPS. And also it is possible to open GPX-Files (i.e. Pocket Queries) for paperless geocaching. I used Trekbuddy on my previous Symbian phone. And as Java app it also runs on some other phone OS.

An added checkmark would be better in my eyes than a change in color. Some people print out maps in B/W. That would make it difficult to distinguish green and blue. Corrected Coordinates have some more problems at the moment. I.e. when you search a Mystery with the android Groundspeak app (based on a PQ import) and you choose to "live" refresh that cache to see its current status or newer logs, the custom coords are gone (just in the app). Also it would be even better to have a waypoint editor to keep stations of i.e. half-solved multis for the record. There are utilities which can handle this better (like GCTour for tour planning, GSAK, GAPP or GeoGet and more for handling coords, map display and waypoints). But it would be great to have such basic functions on the site itself.

Ich habe auch ordentlich Ärger mit der App bei einem unser Telefone gehabt (noch Android 2.1). Da war wohl der Test nicht so umfangreich bzw. die Kompatibilitätsangabe zu optimistisch. Ansonsten ist der aktuelle Funktionsumfang sicherlich nicht berauschend, auch Updates gabs eine ganze Weile nicht mehr. Ich habe die App dennoch als "Backup" zusätzlich auf dem Telefon herumstehen. Meine Spekulation: Ich vermute Groundspeak hat die App einmal erstellt und veröffentlicht und scheut sich angesichts der wohl eher lauen Absatzzahlen noch viel Aufwand in eine Funktionserweiterung zu investieren. Es ist wohl nicht zu erwarten, dass der App-Absatz diese Kosten deckt. Da die App meines Wissens aber aufgrund der Live-API Beschänkungen sowieso nur für Premium-Member attraktiv ist, frage ich mich, ob so eine Kostendeckung überhaupt angestrebt werden muß. Man könnte eine App ja auch als Service am zahlenden User sehen. Wobei ich den Obulus beim Kauf damit nicht zwingend abschaffen möchte, wenn denn nur die App auch besser wäre. Viele Grüße vom SKAMS

Hallo Forum, Robert von der (u.a.) niederländischen Site http://www.globalcaching.eu/ hat eine Chat-Session (per Text) Bryan Roth am 21.11. (ab 20:00 Uhr) arrangiert. Bryan Roth ist ein Vize-Präsident von Groundspeak (siehe: http://www.Groundspeak.com/about.aspx#OurTeam). Es geht also im wesentlichen um Themen von geocaching.com und Konsorten. Wer also schonmal immer mal direkt Groundspeak kommunizieren wollte hat dann die Gelegenheit. Die Sprache des Chats wird im Wesentlichen auf Englisch sein. Wenn nichts dazwischenkommt, werde ich aber gerne versuchen deutsche Fragen "live" radebrechend zu übersetzen. Dazu bin ich dann wohl auch per Skype mit ihm verbunden. Es ist auch möglich aber keine Bedingung, im Vorwege Fragen zu formulieren (z.B. hier als Post), ich werde sie gerne übersetzen. Sie werden dann weitergeleitet. Dann hat Bryan ggf. Gelegenheit sich etwas vorzubereiten. Ich denke mal es ist sinnvoll (und für mich einfacher) die Fragen kurz zu halten. Voraussetzungen: Wer mitmachen möchte, muß um den Chat benutzen zu können sich bei Globalcaching.eu registriert haben. Das kostet natürlich nichts, ist aber eine Bedingung der aktuellen Chatfunktion dort. Außerdem wird für den Chat-Client Java benötigt. Das schreibe ich dazu, weil viele ggf. Java aus Sicherheitsgründen im Browser deaktiviert haben. Es ist sinnvoll, die Chat-Funktion vorher auf der Seite einmal zu testen. Sicherlich kommt die Frage auf, wieso nun gerade dieser Chat bei einer externen Seite stattfindet. Dazu kann ich sagen, daß sich Robert mit Groundspeak gesprochen und sich um diesen Chat auf seiner Website gekümmert hat. Er hat mich gebeten, zusätzlich auch deutsche Geocacher zum Chat einzuladen. Perhaps a different approach would make a membership attractive for new members. That may not be desirable for all geocachers but probably for Groundspeak ;-) The term "Premium Member" leaves space for another member level above "Basic Membership". I could imagine a "Plus Member". Perhaps especially for (those) smartphone users. You purchase the geocaching app for i.e. $7,50 and get half a year "Plus Membership" included. This means that you can import geocaches to that smartphone app/account only (limited Live API access). Membership can be extended each 6 months for $7,50 (or 5$) by "In-App Purchase" or "upgraded" to a normal Premium Membership. That would make geocaching perhaps more attractive to those users which currently use "unapproved apps" on their smartphone.

Our kids are 6, 8 and 9. Caching runs well if the tours are prepared and the area is somewhat "entertaining". But: Stealth mode is impossible. Any cache location where muggles are around (this may also be caches in the forest along often used paths) are not suited for our kids. If you have to be silent or wait some minutes until the muggles are out of sight it gets critical at least. Also difficult cache hides which take longer then 5 minutes to find can be a problem.

Also für das Geocachen auf Java-Mobiltelefonen gibt es die GPS-Software "Trekbuddy". Die kann z.B. auch mit einer Pocket-Query oder GPX-Dateien aus anderen Quellen zwecks Paperless Caching gefüttert werden und, (was ich nie probiert hatte) kann wohl zu Wegpunkten auch Fieldnotes erfassen. Diese Notes landen dann in Dateien die (hoffentlich) an Geocaching.com hochgeladen werden können und dort einen Anhaltspunkt für die Erstellung der Logs ergeben. Ok, das ist nicht Online. Falls das Telefon kein GPS hat, dann ist evtl. auch der verwendete GPS-Empfänger in der Lage Fieldnotes zu erfassen?

Hallo FlamingoHH, viele Android Apps (also z.B. Locus, c:geo, GDAK) laufen mit kostenfrei erhältlichen Openstreetmap-Karten (mapsforge). (Beispiel: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=36.9305&lon=30.6895&zoom=13&layers=C) Diese Karten sind vergleichsweise platzsparend und passen meist im Stück für das ganze Land in den Telefonspeicher/SD-Karte. Auf diesen Karten kann man beliebig zoomen und es scheint auch so, daß die OSM-Karten für die Türkei ganz gut gepflegt sind. Da es keine Satellitenkarten sind, nehmen die Details natürlich irgendwann ab, aber Dinge wie Wege/Gewässer/Kreuzungen etc. sind zwecks Orientierung natürlich auch hilfreich. Ich finde OSM-Karten auch immer dann gut, wenn es darum geht, einen Weg zum Cache finden. Meist sind die begehbaren Pfade recht gut eingezeichnet und man sieht, wo an anderer Stelle z.B. ein Wasserlauf im Weg steht oder einfach kein Weg ist. Die App NeonGeo z.B. benötigt bei Offline-Karten eine entsprechende Vorbereitung verschiedener Zoom-Stufen mit separaten Tools am PC (MOBAC). Unterstützt dafür aber dann aber auch Offline-Satellitenkarten. Ähnliches gilt auch für die App a:Drake (sofern sich zuletzt da nichts geändert hat). Viele Grüße vom SKAMS

I use GDAK regularly on my phone and sometimes also on my tablet. (I used GSAK databases previously, but now I switched to the tool GAPP, which has an option to export databases for GDAK. But this should not make a difference.) Its all about "sqlite.db3". I have the following directories on the phone: I have the folder GDAK in /mnt/sdcard I selected "/mnt/sdcard/GDAK" in the GDAK settings as Database Location. In that folder I have one folder per Database. And in each folder I have the file sqlite.db3 which comes from i.e. GSAK. For example DB1 & DB2 are stored in these files: /mnt/sdcard/GDAK/DB1/sqlite.db3 /mnt/sdcard/GDAK/DB2/sqlite.db3 That way I can select between the databases DB1 and DB2 in the setting "Database Name" or via the Database-Icon in GDAK. When a newly copied database is first opened it takes a bit longer because the database is slightly restructured. There's a Macro for GSAK especially for the Export to GDAK: http://gsak.net/board/index.php?act=ST&f=29&t=22016 (I have not tried it out as I don't use GSAK anymore) About tablets: Tablets with Android 3 & 4 usually have two sdcard folders. One is "/mnt/sdcard" and is stored on the internal flash memory of the tablet. The other is "/mnt/sdcard2" and refers the the "real" sdcard. The latter is read-only on many tablets, or can only be written with special tools (i.e. tablets file manager) or when formatted to i.e. exFAT. Therefore I recommend to store GDAK databases on "/mnt/sdcard" only. There are many possibilities to transfer tha GSAK Database to an Android Phone/Tablet. Via USB-Cable is one way. Other transfer the file via "DropBox". Personally I use the app "FTPServer" and use some FTP Client (Total Commander in that case) on the PC to access the Phone in the local network via WiFi. On the tablet, I often use a file manager app with SMB/Lan Capabilities to access the shares on my NAS. (In that case Total Commander for Android with the LAN Plugin).

Hallo Jesari, ich verwende noch das Vormodell des Etrex (Vista HxC) daher gebe ich nur zu einem Teilaspekt meinen Senf ab. 1. Das etrex30 hat im Wesentlichen meine ich zusätzlich einen Kompass und Höhenmesser. 2. Beide eTtrexe haben keinen Touchscreen sondern die Bedienung per Knopfdruck/Joystick. Ich habe meine (ca.) ersten Cacheerfahrungen im Februar bei Eis und Schnee gemacht. Damals verwendeten wir noch Telefone und es fielen doch die Defizite von Touchscreens auf. Mit Fäustlingen kriegt man nix gebacken und ohne Handschuhe frieren einem bei -7C schnell die Finger ein. Auch die Akkulaufzeit geht bei niedrigen Temperaturen schneller nach unten, aber alle von Dir genannten Empfänger besetzen natürlich wechselbare Batterien (man darf auch Akkus nehmen). Natürlich ist nicht immer Winter, aber das hatte uns u.a. bewogen, ein Gerät mit Tastenbedienung zu nehmen. Witzig aber wahr, ein anderer Kritikpunkt am Smartphone war die fehlende Schlaufe (auch als Plumpsschutz bei Verwendung durch Kinder). Ein Kompass an sich (beim Smartphone ja meist automatisch dabei) ist schon praktisch. Insbesondere beim Cachen ohne Karte macht er die Sache einfacher. Wobei der Kompass des etrex30 hier schon öfter in die Kritik gerät. Gerade auch Kinder und Anfänger drehen sich bei der Suche gerne mal im Stand, dann schafft es (wenn überhaupt) nur der Kompass noch die richtige Richtung zum Cache anzuzeigen. Wer es schafft die (z.B. OSM-) Karte mit der Umgebung abzugleichen, oder aber die Richtung nur bei Bewegung abliest, kommt auch ohne Kompass zurecht. Das war mein Senf. Viele Grüße vom SKAMS.

If you look at the list of your pocket queries at geocaching.com there should be a button preview PQ on map. And that map should be printable from your browser. When I want to print a map with caches for i.e. a Tour, I use the following combination. + Firefox Browser + Greasemonkey Add-on + GC Tour ( http://gctour.madd.in/) GCTour allows to add caches to individual tours. It then has a very flexible and paper-saving function to print these caches. This includes an overview map + list, optionally individual maps and editable cache descriptions. Also those tours can be passed via a special web-link to friends. I assume that these tools are also usable on a mac, as firefox is available for the mac. But I have used it so far only on a PC.

Hallo t9ny, die Mitgliedschaft als Premium-Member hat mit der Offline-Karte meines Wissens überhaupt nichts zu tun. Es gibt in der Geocaching.com App (für Android) meines Wissens schlicht keine Offline-Map Funktion. Ich benutze diese App inzwischen fast nie. Eventuell hilft es, wenn man die Karte für den Zielbereich aufruft, solange man noch im Online-Empfangsbereich ist. Alternativ kann man natürlich stets ohne Karte im Kompassmodus navigieren. Was leider nicht klappt, ist die Verwendung der Offline-Karten Funktion von Google-Maps. (Habe es gerade mal ausprobiert) Ansonsten gibt es natürlich noch eine Fülle von anderen Android-Apps zum Thema geocaching von denen einige auch Offline-Maps unterstützen (z.B. von Openstreetmaps). Viele davon verwenden die sogenannte "Live-API" und die genannten PocketQueries welche nur für Premium-Mitglieder interessant sind. Die Regel ist doch eigentlich klar. Man muß in das Logbuch vor Ort eingetragen sein, dann darf man online loggen. Ansonsten darf man ja auch gerne einen DNF loggen. Da gibt es doch eigentlich keinen Interpretationsspielraum, auch wenn ich es verstehen würde wenn z.B. ausländische Logger mal statt Eintrag ihre Visitenkarte reinlegen, weil das in ihrer Region häufig so gehandhabt wird. Letztlich wäre das ja ziemlich egal, sollen die sich doch selbst betrügen. Aber ein Log wo ein DNF angebracht wäre ist wie im Eingangsposting geschrieben doch irreführend. Ich prüfe fast immer die Caches der Tour bevor ich mit den Kindern losziehe auf kürzliche DNFs. So espart man sich oft Frust-Erlebnisse. Sei es weil die Caches wirklich weg sind, oder weil sie einfach sehr gut versteckt sind. Ich habe auch mal bei einem Mystery an dem ich besonders lange geknobelt habe, einen Note (kein Log) geschrieben. Das ist evtl. schon etwas wackelig, aber ich kann ihn beim Log ja wieder entfernen. Auch das Thema Ersatzdose will sich mir nicht erschließen. Man kann natürlich mal den Owner kontaktieren und in Abstimmung neu verdosen, aber einfach so?? Würde ich höchstens machen, wenn ich das Log in der Gegend rumfliegen sehe (weil gemuggelt). Das ist mir bisher einmal passiert, da fand sich in der Gegend verteilt dann aber auch noch die Original-Dose.
