  1. I haven't found a GPS software that is useful for Geocaching, but I do have a free GPS navigation software that I loaded on my BB 8310. It seems to work fine, but the draw back is that you can not punch in a coordinate. Check it out for yourself. http://www.amazegps.com/welcome.php
  2. Try AmazeGPS. I just loaded it on my BB 8310 and it seems to be working fine. Software is absolutely free!! You can choose what kind of map you want to view it in, standard map view, aerial view or hybrid. You can also use it for turn by turn directions with voice guidance. You must have unlimited data plan or it can be expensive when loading aerial maps. One draw back though, you can't punch in a lat. long. position. Otherwise, for a free GPS software it works fine. http://www.amazegps.com/welcome.php
  3. I first read about it either in Popular Mechanics or Popular Science in 2003. Went looking for a new GPS after reading the article. Was using the now infamous Geodiscovery Geode.
  4. A friend of mine at work asked if I knew of any good TOPO maps for the Magellan Triton 200. He currently has National geographic's TOPO loaded onto it, but he isn't happy with it. He wants good details showing trails and such. He wants it to cover the Northeast area. I'm a Garmin user and don't know much about Magellan software. Thanks fellow cachers.
  5. I also used the IO Gears adapter when I owned an Etrex Venture. It worked flawlessly.
  6. I think the GMRS radios will go by way of CB radios. I remember as a kid in the '70's, CB radio operators had to be licensed and were mainly operated by truckers. Over the years everyone had a CB radio and were operating them without a license. Since the airway was just flooded with unlicensed operators, the FCC changed the rules and allowed CB's to be operated without a license. I think that's going to happen with GMRS.
  7. Only need the license if you actually USE the GMRS channels. Actually, if the radio is capable of 1 to 5 watts of power, it is considered a GMRS under the FCC rules and regs. In the user manuals of all of those "bubble package" radios that claim long range transmission, it states that you need to apply for a license. Just a warning, there are some radio groups out there who hunt for unlicensed operators using doppler direction finders! As stated above, the chance of being caught is very slim. Just use proper radio etiquette as not draw any attention. I guess my wife is right, I'm a "Dudley Do Right", I always try and do the right thing.
  8. Do you have a Gander Mountain or Cabela's? If so, check them out. They carry GPS accessories.
  9. Yes, it is 80 US dollars for 5 years. If you are using a FRS/GMRS radio, you still have to get a FCC license to operate in the USA. If it is FRS only, you do not have to get a license.
  10. I live in the same region as you and I own a 60CSX, and I can tell you from experience, That the 60CSX is an awesome unit. It has never let me down, from car navigation to hiking and to geocaching. If you already own a GPS for your vehicle, it can be a back-up, or you can save some dough and purchase a Vista HCX. Both units have a barometric altimeter which would help to increase your accuracy. Using the altimeter in conjunction with a TOPO map will help in finding your cache in our mountainous region. I hope my .02 cents helps.
  11. I have a Geodiscovery Geode for the Handspring Visor PDA. My wife bought it for me as a birthday gift I believe back in 2000 or 2001. Thought it was awesome until I found out that it wasn't fully developed and the company folded. Oh well, live and learn. I had a Garmin Venture I bought new I think in 2003, but gave it to buddy of mine in 2006 when I found out he was being deployed to Iraq. (He's back now, alive and safe) I currently own a 60CSX.
  12. I have no problem using a serial to usb adapter with my etrex venture & ms streets and trips. The adapter that use is an iogear. It comes with a driver and I haven't had any problems. Click on the link to view the adapter.http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GUC232A
  13. I had the Magellan GPS Companion (still have) for the Handspring. My Handspring (2 actually) is non-functional due to damage. I have Garmins as follows (all functional): GPS 12 GPS V GPSmap 60CSx I didn't mean that my Geodiscovery Geode is non-functional, I meant that the company no longer exists.
  14. THE 60CSX IS THE THIRD GPS UNIT I OWN. I HAVE NOT HAVE ANY OF THE PROBLEMS THAT I HAVE READ. I'VE ONLY HAD THE UNIT FOR ABOUT A MONTH, BUT HAVE USED IT QUITE BIT. I MOSTLY USE IT FOR HIKING AND GEOCACHING. OCCASIONALLY, I USE IT IN MY VEHICLE, BUT I DON'T HAVE ANY MAPS LOADED ON IT. I DO USE IT WITH MS STREETS & TRIPS ON MY LAPTOP. I'VE USED IT SIDE BY SIDE WITH MY ETREX VENTURE, AND SO FAR THE 60 CSX SURPASSES IT. THE AVERAGE ACCURACY FOR THE 60 CSX IN THE VEHICLE OR ON FOOT IS 10FT - 12FT. THE ETREX, 15FT - 20FT. IN HEAVY FOLIAGE, THE 60 CSX WINS HANDS DOWN! THE NEW SiRF CHIPSET JUST GRABS ON TO THE SIGNALS ON HOLDS ON. IT'S SO SENSITIVE, I EVEN GET SATELLITE LOCK WHILE IN THE HOUSE! THE ETREX ON THE OTHER HAND TENDS TO LOSE MOST OF THE SATELLITES WHICH DECREASES THE ACCURACY MAKING GEOCACHING SOMETIMES DIFFICULT. BOTTOM LINE, I LIKE MY ETREX VENTURE, BUT I LOVE MY 60CSX! YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER, THIS IS A CONSUMER GRADE GPS UNIT NOT A MILITARY GRADE COSTING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR A HANDHELD UNIT. I THINK GARMIN HAS A WINNER HERE AND WILL CONTINUE TO OFFER QUALITY PRODUCTS.
  15. GARMIN ETREX VENTURE GARMIN GPSMAP 60CSX THE NOW DEFUNCT GEODISCOVERY GEODE MODULE FOR MY HANDSPRING PDA
  16. I HAVE AN ETREX VENTURE WHICH I HAVE USED FOR A FEW YEARS NOW WITH MY LAPTOP. WHAT YOU NEED IS GARMINS PC INTERFACE/12 V POWER CABLE #010-10268-00 WHICH YOU CAN FIND ONLINE OR AT A BEST BUY OR A GANDER MOUNTAIN. THE USB/SERIAL ADAPTER THAT I USE IS AN IOGEAR #GUC232A (WWW.IOGEAR.COM) I FOUND THIS AT A STAPLES OFFICE SUPPLY STORE. I'VE USED THESE WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS AT ALL WITH MY LAPTOP RUNNING MS STREETS AND TRIP 2005. I HOPE THIS INFORMATION HELPS YOU. HAPPY GPSING
