  1. I suspect that the object upon which the disc is mounted would be in the way of seeing the disc from the satellite. The visible from 15° above horizon thing.
  2. The acme GPS is the hand crank model. Rather large and it is shipped to the user in a large wooden crate. No doubt you noticed the topo grid lines get real close together, often, in this area. Think loud whistling noise, pitching lowering with time, ending in a loud crash sound, accompanied with extreme vibration.
  3. Roadrunner and Wile E. are definitely around here. I seen 'em. LOL. Advice taken on damage to foundation. Much of the info about the demise of signal bridges around here comes from my late father in law. He was the station agent here tor 20+ years and a telegrapher before that back to 1947. After I moved here in 74 he used to call me if something exciting was going on with the RR. I got to see the result of a couple signal bridge rip outs and numerous derailments. This is the main line into the northwest and 30 or more trains pass through here per day. It was not unheard of for a signal bridge to get ripped out and dragged through another one. I think the way the signals were set up here, if there is an electrical problem (broken circut) everything turns red both ways for several miles in each direction. To make things more complicated there are 3 main lines through GF. Oficially #1 #2 & #3. referred to as eastbound, westbound, and old main. We are on a kind of upside-down mountain here. At the bottom of the snake river gully. trains have to climb out eastbound from King Hill and westbound from Hammett. The reason for all the extra mains is to releive the congestion caused by all this climbing. Back to benchmarking. Lookie all the "not yet founds" in a 10 mile radius to the south of this one. http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=NV0984 Giess I better get after it.
  4. Oh yes. The signal bridges. It used to be pretty impressive to see a row of them stretched out across the flat open country here. One every mile, I think. Also quite an event when a piece of equipment would get loose on a flat car and take one out. Of course the signals in front of the train would indicate red but it might take a mile or so to get stopped. With the mangled remains of the bridge dragging along as it went. I suspect that one was gone before 1983. The damage to the disc may have been caused as the ironwork was dragged off the foundation. I will do the very brief log as you suggest. Additionally: Benchmarking is wide open here as I am the first one to get at all serious about it. There are a lot of them that have not been logged by NGS since being monumented. The cachers that have logged some don't seem to be interested in getting very far off the pavement in search of them. That leaves the field wide open for a nut like me. Thanks for your reply
  5. Thanks for the replies. The Groundspeak log will suffice. I'll not clutter up ngs with my log as the benchmark is essentially unchanged since 1983.
  6. I don't think this would qualify as a benchmark. Looks like a property corner to me. If that is what it is, information regarding it would be available at your county recorder's office, in the form of legal descriptions backed up by maps. Legal descriptions is a topic where you can get completely involved in the hunt. I owned a piece of property that had an erroneous description that had been passed on for several owners. Never did get the title company to admit the wrong. Finally sold the property that way. Same title company guaranteed it. Go figure.
  7. I am looking for some guidance on logging a benchmark with NGS that I believe was inaccurately logged by NGS in 1983. First I would like to point out that I do not like to load up the NGS database with superfluous information and as such, will only log where there have been substantial changes from past logs or the mark has not been logged in an extremely long time. The log in question is NV0489. In my Groundspeak log I get a little wordy as it is obvious that other geocachers have had trouble finding this even though it is rather prominently located. My NGS log comment might be something like this. Contrary to previous log, the disc has not been vandalized but shows damage incurred during the accident when signal bridge was ripped out by a passing train that had something sticking out of it. The disc does not show signs of having been moved and the information on it is very legible. This mark is on a pier of several yards of concrete that is very unlikely to move, short of a derailment in which the train would hit that concrete mass. I would certainly appreciate any comments or alternate text for this entry.
  8. stripemark, I'll have to go with "found station in poor/destroyed condition. I'm new to benchmarking but have read a lot of descriptions in the last couple months and i am obsessive about finding all possible parts of a triangulation station. It is possible that this description got distorted a little in transcription in an office or the surveyor waited a time to do his logging and it was not clear in his mind after doing a bunch of resets with all the work involved. also look here: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/FORMS_PROCESSING-c...y_entry_www.prl
  9. Thanks for the fast replies folks. This one was on the main route into the northwest when pressurized cabins were things of science fiction. Amazing that it is still there. It's removal must have been pushed to the back of bureaucratic "to do" lists until completely forgotten. Think i will try to figure out some way to replace some broken and missing braces from the first tier. Perhaps some twisted wire things like farmers use on their end and corner posts.
  10. I've been looking and looking in benchmarks and forums for another one of these and cannot find. There are a number of logs that refer to tower supports still there but no complete beacons. Is it possible that I have logged the only one left in the universe? NV1144 is a 60 foot tower airway beacon that is still standing and complete, less bullet damage. It was originally monumented in 1945 and may be older than that. It has been abandoned as a beacon for many years. There is no sign of the power line that fed it. The electric box is definitely 1930s technology.
  11. wondering about a category like most found within 100 mile radius of contestants home..........????
  12. "Why?", You ask. "Why not?", I ask.
  13. Maybe so but he did teach me how to get ahead. That IS what I paid for, don't you know?. My life isn't over because I went to school and learned how to get ahead. I know we're all headed for the short trench but face it, I want to leave mine, more toys than you want to. Does that make me evil??? At the end of the day, the more I have at the end of the day, the more pleasures I can have. Simple or otherwise. Accounting ensures that outcome.
  14. Prevent forest fires. Register mtches.
  15. oops, I think I found my answer in the original datasheet. Looks like i should have wandered off in the 66° direction for that. Thes basalt must be somewhat magnetic, the compas really spooky here. Your comments would still be appreciated

    test my avator

If You are NOT using the copyrighted material to make money not much attention will be paid to what you do with it. If the image is something they are trying to sell to you and you get around that sale and use the image they will be looking at you. If you in some way use a copyrighted image to damage the copyright owner, they will surely get you. You also have a legal right of limited use. I don't know what the parameters are here. I know nothing about printmaster,But a google search yielded a bunch of businesses that use that name. Perhaps they want money. You ned to read the website thoroughally and follow the links to find out. The tater said that.

    test my avator

This is a test. Nothing but a test of my perception of how to post here. This reminds me of when i was attempting to learn how to usenet back in '96. The tater said that. Ok so where is the send/save/post button I think this thing is too fancy for my limited cranial capacity. Oh. Must be the "add reply button" Here goes..........
