  1. I have lived here in SW Michigan area most of my life. Up until this year, I have only had one run-in with a tick. (About 25 years ago.) This year however, it has been an entirely different story. We have a couple of cats that are in and out of the house. So, Laura checks them for ticks every day. (Especially after I had found two in the house over this past week.) After bringing the cats in one evening a couple of days ago, I noticed a tick on my pant leg. (He was quickly squished!) Laura started checking the cats, and I couldn't believe what she had found. After only being out for an hour or so, one of the cats had three ticks burrowed in, and the other had two. Like I said, I have never seen them this bad before. Should we be concerned, maybe. Should we be afraid, NEVER! We just check ourselves out good before coming in the house.
  2. I think that this one has to be, by far, one of the most extreme caches in the world. Erta Ale Volcano Geocache It is rated a 5/5, and apparently has had no takers. My suggestion is, place it, rate it appropriately, and describe all of the necessary safety equipment needed. There has to be someone out there that has been waiting for a cache just like this.
  3. I voted for "Undecided". I feel that everyone should have a choice as to whether their name is displayed or not. That takes us back to the "Anonymous" choice. If you choose this option, not only would your name not appear, but i vote that no one else would be visible to you. I guess what I am trying to say is that either way, to me, it really doesn't matter.
  4. I am currently holding on to a TB. We went looking for another today, but the cache had been emptied of the two bugs that are supposed to be there. (Red Mill Cache) We read through the cache log book, and it was clear when and who dropped them off, but nothing about who or when they were taken. I would hope that these are just taken by mistake, and not intentionally kidnapped. Just a suggestion, maybe Goundspeak could print something on the back of the tag stating that this should be logged seperate from logging the cache itself. I don't know, maybe if the tag stated how to log the bugs, maybe more would survive.
  5. We are using an older (about 7-8 yrs) Eagle Expedition II. It has proven to be suprisingly accurate. We tend to notice that when we get to within 20-30 feet, the numbers start to bounce around. Even standing still, we can be within 3 feet one second, and 40 feet the next. It is true that the faster you are moving, the better. Usually, when we get to within 20 feet or so, I just turn the GPS off to save batteries. After the first few finds, it starts becoming more and more obvious as to where the cache might be. (Still have a few we can't find.) Just don't give up!
  6. I may not speak for all. But for us, we'll never give up on a cache! There is one that has been a thorn in our side for quite some time. The first time out, we looked for about a half hour or so. We were sure that we were in the right place. This was one out of about six or seven that we had planned for the day, so we decided to skip it and find the others. After watching the logs for a couple of weeks, it was painfully obvious that WE ARE BLIND! So, we go back and try it again with no luck. I know that we are in the right location, we just aren't LOOKING. Needless to say, we'll go back again. The only problem is that it is about 65-70 miles away. Like Team_Shing said in the original post "It's almost getting personal now."
  7. quote:Originally posted by Arizabif:So are handmade things "good things" for a cache? I've been making little knit bags and stuffed bunnies to put in caches. I think they are cute, and they are something I would want, and I can make a bunch of them for not too much money, (the husband has placed a moratorium on spending for my 1,001 hobbies. ). Each one is different, and they are made by little ole me. But not everyone thinks handmade items are nice; some people think they are absolute crapola, (like my family...but that is for another thread, I think). Do you think it's a good idea, or should I find another venue for my handknit bunny production? Maybe I'm wrong, but why should "cool" be expensive? I don't see anything wrong with hand-made items in caches. If you don't like it, don't trade for it. I agree that the few caches that we have found were pretty much full of "junk", but that isn't why we do this. Maybe view the logs for the cache first and decide if it is one that you want to find. (If you only do this for the LOOT.) Enough senseless rambling.
  8. Obviously, there are going to be a variety of opinions on this topic. We recently visited a cache located just outside of an old, very historic cemetery. Due to the location of the cache and houses in the area, you have to park at the entrance of the cemetery and walk through to the other end. The cache is located just outside of the cemetery along a river. Personally, I think that not only is it acceptable, but almost neccesary. The increased traffic in these areas help to keep vandals and partiers away. Also, keeping with the "Cache In, Trash Out" philosophy, I think that it will help to keep these places a little more intact. Again, being respectful is paramount. And all things being what they are, ultimately the decision, and responsibility, is yours.
  9. Well, we did read a little bit. I turned off the pinning feature and the battery save feature. We went out caching today. 3 for 3!!! Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
  10. Thanks for all of the information. I guess that maybe we should actually READ the manual. Will try these suggestions, read some more, and try it again. Thanks again for your help.
  11. Yes, it was set to WGS84 before waypoint was entered. After I set to WGS84, I cleared everything and started over.
  12. We are new to geocaching. Have have had an Eagle Expedition II for a few years, but never really used it. It was purchased mainly for navigation for boating. When we discovered Geocaching, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to give it a workout. On our first cache, a 1,1 the coordinates were about 600ft. from where the cache actually was. I later discovered that the coordinate system was not set properly. We have since set the proper coordinate system within this unit. Today, we tried three different caches, each were supposed to be real easy. We failed to find any of them! On one, it showed the cache to be in the middle of the road! Does anyone know what we are missing? Are we just technologicaly challenged?!?! Is there some way to calibrate this particular unit? Maybe some place that is an established position that we could use to verify position and possibly use a shift? Please help.
