  1. That is a good suggestion, but do you have any devices that you recommend? I have the feeling that most people that are looking for a cheap way to go paperless will be taking the ebay route where it isn't really possible to look before you buy. Would the Palm m500 and m515 that a previous user suggested be acceptable? I personally might be able to take a palm from work outside to see how it looks, but my choices there are very very limited.
  2. Heh, I just realized that I flew to and from Washington DC a while ago and I never even bothered to take my GPS out of my laptop bag. I never really even considered the fact that it could be a problem. Just for reference, I was flying United from Chicago.
  3. I know there are lots of great locations around the area. The reason why I was asking about this location is just because I was so surprised to find the location that was to be my first hide was taken away from me so suddenly. I am surprised that the person that hid the cache in my area even knew that forest preserve existed since they are from 30 some miles away. Thanks everyone for all the help and thanks for the suggestions.
  4. would it be within the rules to make this a multi cache and put the final container where I have it already, but put the first part of the multi further away? (I am new to hiding, so please bear with me) Thanks
  5. I think I know of a new spot out there in the forest preserve that is far enough away.... but just out of curiosity, what is the address to email the cache approver person? or would I just include a note in the cache submission page? Thanks for your comments, Aaron Elangomatt
  6. oh duh.... that is obvious now that you mention it.... kinda like a cache I found today on the third try
  7. Just to let you know the rule is within .10 miles (528 feet or 161 meters), not .01 miles. I plan to place caches around here well away from the recent cache, but I just particuraly liked the spot I had picked out.
  8. do you think it would be to my advantage that there are currently only 8 caches in my entire county? or would that not really matter at all? Aaron
  9. I was just wondering how strict the enforcement of the Cache Saturation rule of not allowing caches within .1 miles of each other. Here is my situation. I have been planning to place a cache in a forest preserve quite near my house for the last few months. I have visited the location twice to get a good average reading and I have the cache fully prepared and was going to place it this week finally. I even have a pile of rocks at the location ready to cover my cache. This past weekend, another geocacher hid a geocache .09 miles from my chosen location. Should I take a chance a place the cache and submit the cache for aproval? or should I just scrap my chosen hiding spot and find a new place? Thanks for the help. Aaron Elangomatt
  10. I just wanted to chime in and say that I got my $50 rebate in the last week for my Meridian. Way back when I got the email saying my rebate was approved, it said my rebate would be mailed in 3 months. It actually was almost exactly 3 months when I got it. I was actually most worried because I waited like 6 months or more after I purchased my GPSr before sending the rebate in. Aaron Elangomatt
  11. thanks for the help! I am there now! (I love the newest mIRC where you can be on two servers at once :-) )
  12. I saw a webpage somewhere about a mIRC channel for geocaching.... but I was wondering what server that channel is on. If someone could share that info with me, it would be much appreciated!
  13. I don't know if this counts but a local cache page says "easy walk from the road" but the "easy" walk is through EXTREMLY dense undergroth where I got my pants very muddy from crawling on my hands and knees and my arms got scratched all over and my shirt got ripped in at least half a dozen places!! Sorry... wanted to vent a bit about that one
  14. not that I ever got any more help, but I figured out my problem on my own. I got a dead SD card. I took my card to work and tried it in a digital camera that I know was working properly and the card was not recognized. I went through troubleshooting with sandisk on the phone and the say that I got a bad card. A new one is being sent as I type and the old card is going back.
  15. The SD card should not be the prolem, unless it is a dead card. I took this straight out of the package and put it in my magellan. When I try to upload the region, I get an error saying that it "cannot connect to GPS unit on COM1". I can skip that step however and then after it makes the region and is ready to upload it says "putting GPS in upload mode". Soon after it says that it gives the error and says "GPS communication timeout. Communication has been lost." One thing I have noticed is that there seems to be a discrepancy. The FAQs on the meridian website says to put NMEA into 2.1 GSA mode. However, whenever I get an error, Mapsend says to set NMEA to off. I have also gone into my com port settings on my computer to make sure my baud rate on the com port and GPS are the same. I don't know if it matters, but I tried it
  16. I can't get any maps to upload to my GPS. I know the cable is working right because I can download and upload waypoints, routes, etc. But it will not upload any maps to my GPS. I am using a Meridian with Mapsend S&D. I am just using the serial cable. Any help appreciated
