  1. Where do you find the promotion codes on the staples website? I see the 199.98 Legend is refurbished - anybody have experience with refurbished Garmin products? SouthDeltan
  2. I'm actually not sure if that one is a 'bug' or a 'feature'. The admin may have decided to change that. I've seen a lot of complaints about it. I don't like that change either. I think it should either show the profile from www.geocaching.com OR the board profile should show finds/hides/benchmarks. I'm sure if it was unintentional it'll be fixed shortly. If not we'll just have another thing to complain about, rofl. SouthDeltan
  3. I am sure that there are going to be people who like the change and people who don't. I think we should all be patient while they work out a few things that are obviously bugs. Problems should b eexpected in any change. There is also this thread on the general forum, and it duscusses a lot of the issues, including complaints and compliments. I personaly don't find the skin/theme (the appearance) of the forum to be that different. I have mixed feelings about the popup window - it has nice features but I normally prefer to stay in one window. Apparant bugs: 1. The order of posts was reversed. This seems to have been fixed on some boards. 2. Some of the more recent threads and posts are missing. 3. Posting count is off for most (all?) posters. 4. The profile link now shows the board profile, not the geocaching.com profile (with finds/hides) 5. Links (markwelled) to other posts are broken. I'm posting this so the site Admin know, not to complain. Some things they intended to do, some things they did not intend to do. Lets give them time to work it all out.Elias said he likely broke something. Hrm, wait - I need to email this to him...doh! SouthDeltan
  4. Anybody here have caches in flood prone areas? I live in an area that typically has some flooding every year. There is always lots of debris left behind when the floodwaters go down. Sadly, you can find lots of litter, not just driftwood/etc. We've even had refrigerators and washingmachines float onto some of the land my family owns. Do you sometimes feel like you're fighting a loosing battle? I haven't placed any caches, but I know when I do there is a chance some of them will be in areas that flood. I know I'm gonna hate finding trash that wasn't even littered in that area - stuff that just floated in SouthDeltan
  5. quote: My point is, if you look hard enough you will find a way to hide a tradition cache complete with log and maybe trades even where you once thought it impossible. Maybe they don't want to? I don't buy the arguement that everybody who wants to do something like this is being lazy. I fail to see why so many people are getting into such a tizzy over stuff like this. This is supposed to be a game/sport/hobby. It's for fun. Perhaps they don't want to hide a 'traditional cache'. The only kind of cache I have any sort of problem with are the so called 'locationless' caches. But if people like them, so what? The game is about find stuff with your GPSr and other tools/skills. So what if there's not a box full of cr#p to trade? So what if there's not a physical log? IF it's truely not about numbers, why does it matter? I think hiding an object with a password is an interesting idea. I don't see how the type of the object matters as long as it's not breaking one of the rules about what can't be in a cache and doesn't harm the environment. Hell, if it was a shoe that'd be fine - but it'd likely be moved. If it's not an obvious item and it's not likely to be moved - great. If it's about finding coordinates - I don't see how it can matter if it's "traditional", "micro", "virtual", or "hybrid/surprise" - or even event. There is a slight issue w/ locationless - but if it makes people happy - so what. Too many people are getting upset over how OTHER people have fun. If you don't like the type of cache or the description looks off - DON'T LOOK FOR IT. SouthDeltan
  6. quote:Originally posted by Radman Version 2.0:fine, if anything I post is stupid, offending, and uninteresting, I guess I'll just delete all of my posts. I apologize if my posts were stupid and uninteresting. Editting your posts in the manor shows a total lack of maturity. You also cross posted to another thread that had nothing to do with your posts. I'm not sure what this is all about, but I wait intently on you editting the post I'm replying to so *I* look dumb. (That's why I quoted you). SouthDeltan
  7. You definetly have the right to your opinion, but if the areas managers know about the cache, it's not your problem. If the cache is there without permission, then it clearly should be removed. An earlier poster has already mentioned that this subject has been discussed and most feel that DWA are innapropriate places for caches. If there is a cache in an innapropriate place, the vast majority of cachers support that cache being removed. quote:Originally posted by leavenotrace:(if I were to leave a post on a forum stating that I left my garbage in a tupperware container hidden near a camp to give some one the opportunity to visit that camp for the first time and either haul it out or add to it, would that be okay If there was a website dedicated to using GPS for garbage pickup, I suppose this would be totally acceptable. Seriously, I fail to see the logic behind this reasoning - it is like comparing apples to oranges. You have claimed several times you think geocaching is something you'd like to do, but then compare it to leaving 'garbage' out in forest. That doesn't make much sense. Besides - if the garbage is sealed and well hidden... might make an interesting cache. (As long as the garbage doesnt contain food ) SouthDeltan
  8. quote: Personally, I was trying to organize an Easter egg hunt one-day cache when this topic came up. Please give me some guidance here. thanks. I'd suggest having an event cache instead. You must be planning for people to meet in the area for the easter egg hunt anyways, why not have an event/gathering cache. Post the date and coordinates. People meet at the location and you can have printed lists of 'easter egg' coordinates for people to hunt. I imagine you're going to have a lot of coordinates to put together - but it sounds like a fun meeting. This is practically the same thing anyways. SouthDeltan
  9. There has been some discussion of forming an association for the state of Mississippi on the Mississippi Geocachers Forum. I'd like to invite all new (and old cachers) from Mississippi (and other states) to check out our discussion board and join if you cache in Mississippi. You should also check out the MsGA webpage. This site is still under contstruction as far as I know. Nothing has been formalized, we are still in discussing details, I think a lot of the state's cachers are planning on discussing it at the Metro Area Cachers Lunch. SouthDeltan
  10. Wow, this thread got super active after I forgot about it. Great suggestions, especially the stuff for longer hikes. I haven't been on anything furthur than a few hundred yards yet - but I imagine after the first long cache I'd remember water - doh! Hrm - somebody (COUGHCOUGHcriminalCOUGH) believes in being prepared, must have been a boy scout SouthDeltan
  11. I have wondered about this myself. Here's a list of what I (a newbie) can think of off the top of my head. EQ needed for caching: GPSr (duh) [WaldenRun may debate this] Compass Printouts Map(s) Knife/Multi-tool camera (optional) hiking shoes/boots Perhaps one of the regulars can provide a better and more organized list of suggested equipment. To be honest all I've taken on my few finds is a GPSr and the printouts. I can see the need for other things as I get away from 1/1 caches. SouthDeltan
  12. I was reading the following thread: http://opentopic.Groundspeak.com/0/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=1750973553&f=5790959854&m=7410918045 about a 100/100 club and wondered if there was a Benchmarking leaderboard: http://www.insidecorner.com/geocaching/index.cgi I don't know of one, but then again I am still pretty new to this. I wonder if this would be something benchmarkers would want. SouthDeltan PS - BTW, How do I use UBB code to make these 2 links look more like HTML links? IE, showing a word to click on but not the whole url?
  13. I didn't think the show made GPSr use look bad. As said before, there was Human error in putting in the address. Very similar names ( I beleive the difference was X Street West, and the other was X Street East ). The GPSr told her to turn left (or was it right, hehe), so she did. The marijuana in her system was not at a high enough level for her to confuse the buildings (they ruled that out as a cause of the wreck early in the investigation). She did have glaucoma however, and was enraged and suicidal since her HMO was screwing her over. So her vision was failing and she was not in the clearest state of mind. I didn't see both buildings in question, but the one with the resturaunt wasn't clearly marked as a resturaunt only was it? I only caught the end and it just looked like a building to me, hehe. Maybe somebody who saw the whole episode from the beginning can comment. SouthDeltan
  14. Is there a leaderboard for benchmarks like there is for caches? SD
  15. quote: Okay, have to admit you fooled me then with your original post, where you asked about caches you thought might be in places where you thought they shouldn't be, but at the same time you now state you are "new" to the activity. Can't have it both ways...LOL. I'm sorry if I am defensive, I assume you think I'm some kind of "troll" or whatever - but this statement isn't necessarily true. Just because someone is new doesn't mean they can't be aware of the big picture. I have been visiting this site less than a month. I do not yet own a GPS but will have one by the end of this month. I have found some benchmarks with the use of maps/etc so far. I have been keeping up with what caches are in my area and getting to know some of the local cachers by using these forums. quote: Many times bad placement does cause a bad name for Geocaching in general and there is nothing wrong with checking with the original cache placer to get more info. That's the reason I'm asking. I saw some caches come up that might be on NPS land. I don't want to approach the cacher at this point because they may not be on NPS land and I don't want to piss local cachers off by accusing them of something they haven't done. All I asked was a simple question - was virtual caches on NPS lands ok? That's been answered. I am very excited about this and have several friends interested. The community in my state is apparantly fairly small but growing explosively and I'd hate for a poorly placed cache give geocaching a bad name - first impressions are often the only ones that matter. I personally don't see why anybody would not want something that helped bring more tourists to an area. I would assume (but I may be wrong) that most virtuals are environmentally less problematic than traditional caches. SouthDeltan
  16. Surely if my asking this question was a waste of time then this: quote: You're kidding us, right???? was an even bigger waste of time. I had a legitimate question. If I'd known the answer I wouldn't have asked. The rules say no caches on NPS land. It does not say specifically that "Virtual" caches are ok. I just wanted some clarification. If the official rules page says anything about it I would appreciate it if somebody could show me. Actually this isn't necessary since somebody already answered my question. I don't see why it would be, but I would like to know if it is against geocaching rules and/or etiquette. Forgive me for being new, ignorant, and a time waster . SouthDeltan
  17. I'm sure this has been asked and/or discussed before, so don't shoot a newbie for asking: Is there a way to find members by state? I'm sure it's possible to go through cache-logs and all - but I think a feature that would list them without having to do all of that would be simple to add in and very useful, especially for new cachers looking to find people in their area. It would also be nice to figure out which states had the most cachers and the most cachers per capita. SouthDeltan
  18. Thanks, I was wondering. It doesn't clearly say that it is ok to place a virtual in those places in the section about making your first cache. I may have misread it but from what I can tell it says 'No caches on NPS land' and in the virtual cache section it doesnt list that as an exception. I am not sure if the caches I am curious about are in the wrong place. I saw some new caches near me and I know the area they are in. There is a rather spread out NP there and the caches may not be on NPS land, but on city land. I will look at the caches some more and if I am still curious I will email the cache-placer first. Thanks SD
  19. This question has probably been asked and answered before but I don't see a thread about it so here goes: Is it ok to place a virtual cache on US National Park Service maintained land? I am curious about that. Also, if you think there is a a cache (wether traditional, virtual, or micro) somewhere it shouldn't be - what should you do? SD
  20. They might compete with the sale of offical merchandise. You should ask the site admin (Jeremy et al) about this. They may approve, they may not - best way to find out is to ask them. South Deltan
  21. quote: Be careful...I recall Jeremy scolding someone for this a while back. I used to make some for trade items but after that I quit. Erm... be careful of what? He said he was making a mix tape to listen to while driving. That's not illegal. quote: I'm looking to put together a nice mix CD for driving out to the caches. So far, I've got I like the theme of this thread, btw, nice idea :> I'd like to add (Ok, so some of these are stretchingit a bit): Southbound - The Allman Bros. Band Run through the jungle - CCR I walk the line - Johnny Cash Don't pass me by - The Beatles Crossroads - Eric Clapton SouthDeltan
  22. I agree. If you're just trying to get rid of them, give the first (however many mugs you have) finders a mug. If you can't leave it in the cache for space reasons, have them email you and the first people who log the find get the mugs. South Deltan
  23. Hi, I'm a new member of this site who found it thanks to the C-L article. I spend a good deal of time online and the features available on this website are awesome for a "free" site. I'm looking forward to caching but it may be a while to I can scrounge together enough cash to buy a GPS unit. I was fascinated to see a cache listed very close to my home (the cache is a multi-cache on Lake Washington). I also visited the Degree Confluence website (I actually found that a year ago but didn't keep up with it due to my lack of a GPS unit) and found that there is a Confluence approximately 5 miles from my house. I also love the benchmarking (looking forward to finding my first benchmark on the steps of the Gym at the middle school where I work when I get to work in the morning) section of this site. My wife and I scoured over the listed benchmarks and even the 'not found' ones (and we know why most weren't found, hehe). I think I've rambled enough for a newbie - I just wanted to say that the article has introduced at least one more (and I'd wager many more than that) to the world of geocaching.
