The LPC's are a great way for me to shed a few unwanted pounds! I don't even have to find them, just reading the description makes me loose my appetite! -

I Really Hate To Mention This But I've Gotta Get
tool team replied to Team HHD1's topic in General geocaching topics
I very recently put out this cache Jeepers...a 4x4 Cache and started it off with these 3 travel bugs. The FTF is a highly respected cacher who admirably logged the bugs out and back in and left 2 of his own. The next cacher found the ammo box in the middle of the trail (and I hid it about 50ft from the trail in a tree) with the 3 Jeeps missing? and took the two travel bugs remaining, replacing with zero! Only thing I can figure is an out-a-towner got the 3 Jeeps and has still yet to log? I would never be brazen enough to take more than one bug out of a cache! If I didn't have so much money invested...I would retire... -
South Carolina Legislation Meeting

It seems that the fear of being prosecuted for Geocaching in a cemetary in SC may be the least of our worries. Read the below email from http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=c7...43-5f8444cefeb9 riogrande1836 who contacted me about one of my TB's in his cache! "That story about legislation in SC is almost as bad as what happened to me last September. Read my profile & bio at geocaching.com. I was arrested in Southern New Mexico by Homeland security for being a dope smuggler! All because I had my electronic toys while geocaching in the area of Columbus, NM. An area I have visited and frequented for many years! I had an Etrex Legend, a Garmin GPS-V, about $200 worth of topo maps, my laptop computer with a sattelite uplink, night vision scope, telescope, a $2000 mountain bike, and all my amatuer radio equipment confiscated because a rogue agent claims he had information from a confidential source that my "high tech" gear was used to smuggle drugs! I have never used or had anything to do with drugs......I just love the outdoors and my toys. Anyway back in March in federal court in Las Cruces NM I was trying to get things cleared up and my wife was testifying as to what geocaching was. The judge, my attorney and the US Attorney said they had never heard of Geocaching! They took a recess to research geocaching on the internet...........I am still without my gear, the laptop also had a GPS unit & software installed in it, and I am still waiting for a resolution on this matter before the court. I have to go back to New Mexico in a few weeks to fight with the government! It seems to me that a lot of people who do not know anything about the hobby choose to remain ignorant and in my case choose to try to criminalize a hobbythat has educational value. " THIS DISTURBS ME........... -

Speaking of the above take a look at this virtual that is my favorite cache. It is very well written and tours you around the Savannah area and ends in a much visited cemetary. The below link is the epitome of why GPSr's should be allowed in cemetaries The creator of the above cache is a business owner and in his spare time an historian and preservationist (oh, and of course a dreaded Geocacher). He and his wife have marked over 790 soldiers graves in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Colorado, North Carolina, and Louisiana. They have place headstones on the unmarked graves and marked the spots (and they probably used the dreaded GPS somewhere along the way!) Here is his personal web page. VERY impressive. Do legislators REALLY want to prevent people from doing this extensive, exhaustive, expensive, and much needed volunteer activity! -

Sometimes it is good for someone to play the "Devil's Advocate" in an intelligent debate.......When you are misinformed and you post something like this....hummm...it disturbs me....you drop the "Advocate" from the above description. Its really about the uninformed or the misinformed. We are all feeling the frustration of being judged by uniformed or misinformed people. For the informed, the legislation seems absurb and an extreme waste of tax payer's money, as there are already laws in place for mis-behavior in these areas. I know I spent a month on the website reading rules, regulations, forums, and attending meetings before signing up for an account so that I would appear "knowledgable". And I must admit, that it was probably a year (and a 100+ hrs on the web) of doing so before I REALLY had a grasp of all the rules and etiquette before I could really say I knew what geaocaching was all about! WE ALL know how benign and even benevolent this activity is! We are the experts, however. These reps don't have the time nor the inclination we all have put into this to get a total grasp of the sport. A few do the research and are intelligent enough to make a fair decision (which is really what they get paid for!); they are the minority. Geocaching is something that is hard to explain in a paragraph. You have to experience it! How many of you have been in a gathering and overheard a non-caching friend of yours try to explain the sport for you to someone else. It gets mangled and you have to intervene. We need a description that is detailed and intelligent, yet succinct as possible. Our ability to properly convey our side of the arguement is the largest pitfall facing us. -

As a matter of fact, I have noticed that since this whole mess has started, that logs to my caches in the Hilton Head (Beaufort County) area have droped to almost zero. Since there are only a handful of local cachers, over 95% of these logs were from tourists. Tourism is the backbone of the Hilton Head area. (1) Are the visiting cachers afraid to cache here? OR (2) Are cachers looking for somewhere else to vacation? For the past 2 years, my hotel or campground selection has been based 100% on the number of nearby caches in a particular area. I would guess the majoity are in the #2 group. As we all well know, the cachers who fall into the #1 slot are not happy campers! They will return home with bad press, not only to fellow cachers, but everyone they incounter! I wonder if other cachers in the Beuafort and Charleston area are noticing the same results that I am? -

WOW!! I received two emails back from Reps today!!! Of course, I think I sent out about 37. I love to copy and paste, so it was paste, send, paste, send, etc. Below are the responses: I would recommend that those of you that are represented by these fine folks offer a personal thanks, not because of their vote, but because they took the time, maturity, and intelligence to properly research an issue before making a decision. -
Geocaching May Be Outlawed In South Carolina
tool team replied to wkhaz's topic in General geocaching topics
The bottom line is that this legislation deems that Geocachers as a whole are LESS responsible than the general public. This mean YOU! It does not matter if you are in SC, PA, CA, or anywhere else in the world. THIS MEANS YOU! YOU are irresponsible and insensitive to the needs of others and you need to play games in your OWN backyard. I have been to many geocaching meetings and met hundreds of fellow cachers and I strongly judge the character of those I have met to be far superior to those of a ramdom sample of the public. I have felt a benovolence at these incounters that I can only compare to a church meeting or a boy scout event...ooops on second thought, remembering my scouting days, I'd better scratch that last one. BUT GUESS WHAT...the scouts will be welcome, just not YOU and your GPSr! -

I would love to see a catagory for my favorite caches - Historic Caches. Oh sure, there would be some that fall in tho the gray area, but there are some that do that with the catagories that are listed now.

Should I Go For A Legend Or Vista As My Next Gpsr?
tool team replied to Odwolda's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have an etrex legend and a map 76 and love both them. I have checked out the yellow of a friend and can't imagine using it after using the legend first. I use mine a lot for traveling and love the built in base maps. The map 76 has the same basic software with a few more perks and a bigger screen with BIGGER letters and is easier to read. And for kayaking....it floats. The legend does not I can say for sure because that is how I lost my first legend! This is direct from the Garmin web site: "An extra-large display measuring 1.6"W x 2.2"H gives users a clear view of information, while a waterproof case means the GPSMAP 76 will keep working well even if it's been submerged in water. Even more amazing, this unit will actually float if accidentally dropped in the water." -
Etrex Legend For Sale (pda Too!)
tool team replied to SpongeRob's topic in GPS technology and devices
I bought both of these units as a package...may consider selling the PDA...don't know for sure haven't had much time to look at it as of yet. -
I have gone to caches I have found a couple of times to pick up a travel bug that has been idle for a long period. I usually do this when I am going out of town so the bug get some miles and I replace the bug with one of my own so the owner still has the drawing card.

Why aren't GPS units rechargable like cell phones?
tool team replied to McKenzie Clan's topic in GPS technology and devices
Check this new item out by Rayovac. 15 minute charger and batteries that last 4 times longer. So in between caches you can get a full charge on your batteries. Car and house cables charging ability. Claims 1000 cycles on the batteries. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/productdetail.jsp?xi=xi&ItemId=1613540526&ccitem= -
It seems a lot of people like the caches with historical significance. Is there a way to create an icon for this catagory?

Upset because our historical cache was turned down
tool team replied to GeoGryffindor's topic in Website
I cringed at the thought of a virtual cash when I first heard about them; how could they be as good as a traditional? Now one of my favorite caches every is Area 51 in SC, a virtual.I have also gone to a traditional about 100 ft from a post office, that was probably about as interesting as the telephone pole or the carcass. There are also two virtuals still out there, about 3 mi. apart that involve getting your picture taking by a web came at the front door of a bar and another asking you to name a bust in a 10 x 10 park? -
I have also heard many people say they enjoy the historical caches. I would like to see an icon for "historical caches" and a way to search for those close to an area code or coordinates.
