  1. Awesome photos Team Moxiepup!!!! I would love to hike and cache the Maine countryside one day. Never been there before. Also congrats AndBabyMakes3 on finding your first cache! Sweeeeeet!
  2. I do not know too much about this unit, but glad you posted the link. I am in the market to purchase a unit with paperless capability and have had my eye on the Oregon 400T. But the PN-40 looks like an awesome unit, and with the new update makes it a viable option.
  3. Your not the only one that has had a bad geocaching experience on the first outing. Some never do it again, while others give it another try. I told a coworker of mine about geocaching and how much fun it was and she decided decided to give it a try. Her boyfriend already had an Etrex Legend so they loaded up the coords and set out for there adventure. The following Monday my coworker was steamed and told me it was a complete waste of time and said how boring it was. To top it off, they never found the cache after hours of searching. They vowed never to cache again and that was about 9 months ago. Geocaching is not for everybody, but I think if you were better prepared you would like it. Just my opinion, but I will say that not all cache placements are great, so pick a good one for your first. My first caching experience was awesome and it got me hooked. I'm an avid hiker anyways so it is basically hiking with a destination.
  4. Rightly stated by StarBrand. If you have a multi, then every stage must be in compliance with the guidelines. Around my area this would mostly have to do with declared wilderness areas, national memorial property and private property. So if you place a multi in the National Forest you must not place any of your stages or the final in these off limit areas. I have a puzzle-multi cache called The Force that is placed near the Mt.Rushmore area. It is however not on Memorial property and all the stages follow a trail close to the memorial boundary. I was very careful in placement and did not have a problem listing all of my waypoints. Not really a big deal if you stop and think about it.
  5. There is a cache similar to your idea in my area that is now temporarily shut down. I personally have not had a chance to check it out yet. It is based upon the show Deal or no Deal and the coords take you to a parking area. There are coords for 26 locations and 25 are dead ends with only one being the cache. It is all pure luck in which ones you choose in what particular order. This could take you either 20 minutes or 3 hours. Here is a link to Can you Make a Good Deal cache.
  6. Just curious if anybody out there has a geocaching related tattoo? If so, what did you get? Feel free to post a photo.
  7. This and geocache density in your area. We visited the San Antonio area a few years back and couldn't believe the number of caches in that area and were only able to nab a few due to limited time. In my area there are about 600-700 caches in the entire Black Hills region which covers quite an area. Allot of these caches require a good deal of hiking and climbing steep elevations. So if you were to find 200 caches in 1-2 years in my area, that would be considered good. I would much rather spend my day hiking and enjoying the scenery and claim 2 finds, than find 50 park and grabs any day. It's not about the numbers but the adventure getting there.
  8. Awesome! Thanks for the links. Didn't know I had found the oldest cache-Camp Cache -in my state last summer until checking this out.
  9. Hey, thanks allot guys! I really do appreciate that and you are definitely a class act. I wasn't for sure if you received my message last night as an error code popped up when I sent it. I will admit they were great photos and really looks like you guys had fun finding those pesky micros. But they did reveal too much info about the cache. Photos are welcome on the logs as long as they don't reveal the hiding spot. I enjoy looking at other cachers photos and adds a finishing touch to the whole geocaching adventure. I don't really see anything wrong with posing with ammo cans as they are usually in the cache description. Most geocachers are a friendly bunch and will help out in any way and love to share the adventures of geocaching. So thanks again and Happy Caching! Can you believe the crazy imagination of WatchDog2020!
  10. Its not the palm units that are not compatible, it is the palm desktop software that is not compatible. If the palm desktop software will not work on 64 bit vista then it really does not matter which palm unit you have, it won't work. If you have a palm unit with an SD card then you can use my file move approach along with fileman to put stuff on your palm on a 64 bit Vista. Jim Thanks for the additional info and link!
  11. This is all great information as I have wondered this myself and just posed the question a few days ago on this similar topic. However I own a Palm M515 and am in the market for a new computer that runs 64bit Vista. Now I know that the Hot Sync wont work without some adjustments. I wonder if there is a way of finding out which Palm units are compatible with 64 bit Vista. I am also considering purchasing a Palm Treo 650 Verizon as my cell and caching PDA. Does anybody know if the Treo 650 syncs with 64 bit Vista?
  12. I checked also and it looks like they posted photos on 2 of the 3 evil micro caches, both of which would be spoilers for anyone looking at the logs. One of the photos gave me an idea on how a cache that I DNFed on might be hidden. Thanks for the heads up on the 2nd photo and I can't believe I didn't catch that one. It certainly looks like they have given both hiding places away. Unbelievable!!! They are newbies so I will cut them some slack and explain caching etiquette and politely ask them to remove the photos. I hope they don't find my #3 anytime soon and post a photo, as that one is a work of genius and absolutely evil.
  13. Sorry Snoope, but don't have Skype. Thanks everybody for all of the information. After I purchased this older Palm unit I thought to myself if it was even compatible with newer operating systems. I have XP now, but plan on purchasing a new computer and it seems like they all have Vista. I have heard good and bad things about Vista and am sort of skeptical. I know this may be a little off subject, but what kind of processor does one recommend when purchasing a new computer these days? Don't know if I want to go with quad core.
  14. I recently purchased a used Palm M515 for paperless caching it came with the hot sync cradle and charger but no software. I found a download from Palm for the Desktop 4.1.4 and Hot Sync Manager for Windows. Does anybody out there have a similar PDA that can give me some tips and is this 4.1.4 download compatible with Windows XP and Vista or is there an upgrade?
  15. I recently had some newbies post a photo on one of my caches showing the location and the camouflaged concealment of the container. I have never had this happen while being a cache owner and just wanted some advice on what to do. I do not want to come off being rude if I contact the finders and ask them to remove the photo. Or I can just leave it alone and hope nobody looks at the photo gallery. It is a great photo as the cachers looked very proud to have found it, but I don't want the photo to ruin the fun of the hunt for future cachers.
  16. I found this bag on sierratradingpost.com for a bit less. It's a great bag, lots of pockets and easy to get to things. That appears to be the womens version of the Approach 3.0 , which is a great pack. Yep, the Lily is the women's version of the Approach 3.0. I purchased my Mountainsmith Approach 3.0 last spring by strong recommendation by Briansnat. This is the best daypack I have ever owned with lots of pockets and got it on sale through Campmor for $59. Combined with a Camelbak bladder you can't go wrong.
  17. I have a pair of Leki poles and have had the same problem with the twist-lock design. I was cautioned about their use in cold weather, but didn't worry about it too much. Until they didn't work on the trail. That was a bummer. After warming them up by hand I did manage to get them to lock. But it took some time (and patience) to do. There are alternative locking mechanisms available if you're not happy with your current ones. I'm really happy with my poles despite the problem. 99% of the time they are great. I just bought a set of the ones you linked for my wife. Nice and light and she can clasp the locks without breaking a finger nail. That's not to say it's easy, but it is doable. My wife also bought me these same Black Diamond poles for Christmas. I have yet to put them to the test, but am looking forward to it. The handgrips seem really comfortable and I really like the fliplocks. Not to downplay Leki as I have never owned a set of their poles, but I have heard allot of positive reviews on the Black Diamond fliplock mechanism.
  18. As mentioned by the above poster's, Red Rock Canyon and Mt.Charleston. If you go to Red Rock Canyon be sure to bring your camera as there are some really cool colored rock formations. This is also an excellent area for rock climbing. I used to rock climb in the Ice Box Canyon area many years ago. Hard to believe that there are really beautiful places like this so close to Las Vegas.
  19. I've thought of picking up a Canon A590 when it was on sale for under US$100. I picked up the Canon A590IS about 3 months ago for $109 at B & H Photo with free shipping. I have 2 canon digital SLR's that I use for wedding photography, but wanted something lightweight and compact without spending a fortune. So far I really like this camera and was a great deal for the money. Besides that, I had to find something to replace my old Canon A70 that had finally died on me. I had it for several years and served me well so decided to stick with the Canon A series.
  20. If it is not registered on GC, then it is an actual genuine letterbox, which is a totally different game. Either you can move your geocache to a different location slightly further away or leave it where it is at, and mention the letterbox in your cache description. You might still want to mention it anyway even if you move your cache 100ft away. I was once searching for a good spot to hide a cache near a lake on a beautiful overlook. I just happened to spot a great location and removed a rock near an old chimney foundation and behold, there was a letterbox there. I signed the log and wrote I found it by pure accident. I decided not to hide a cache there as not to add confusion to other cachers.
  21. I have the Etrex Vista and Etrex Vista HCX. Both use different kind of data cables. My old school Vista came with the serial port end and slot type connector. I take it you have the old school Etrex and are wanting one that connects to your USB instead of the serial port, and there happens to be a few on Ebay as I speak. There is one for $14.99 buy it now price.Ebay cable link for Etrex The newer style of Etrex like the Vista HCX uses the USB to mini USB data interface cable which is also the same cable for my Canon digital camera's. This style of cable is very universal compared to the older style cables. Good Luck!
  22. When I first started this thread I thought that the 2 cachers that found my cache in -35 to -45 windchill temps were stud geocachers, but so far Clan Riffster holds the mega stud geocacher title. Kayaking in a tropical storm is very outrageous to say the least. Visions of the movie "A Perfect Storm" came to mind.
  23. I don't know how common these bomb scare geocache occurrences are, but makes you kind of wonder if one day geocaching could be banned due to due to bomb scare incidents like this. Also I was reading an article a few months back about geocaches causing problems for the Wyoming Highway Patrol due to cachers stopping on the shoulder of the interstate to jump out and retrieve a cache. It's things like this that could one day ruin the game-sport that we all love. You just gotta use common sense on where to place a cache and the proper container.
  24. I get my ammo cans from a local Army-Navy store for $6 for the 30cal and $8 for the 50cal. However, this past summer there were hardly any cans left in stock and asked the owner what the deal was. He said with fuel prices hovering around $4 a gallon it was costing him to much for shipping and didn't know if he would be getting anymore in stock. I haven't been back to the store since fuel prices have dropped to see if the owner has restocked. Also I don't know how much of his story about the shipping charges is the truth either.
