WOW, Harmon - what an amazing job you've done with this lesson!! I might just have to talk hubby into buying me the full version of Photoshop so I can really benefit from this...again I say WOW!!

    Laurie,

Find Bill a night job, maybe where Rooster took a night job to support Snake's interests.

Thanks for the compliment. If it's all that good maybe I should read it.

Aren't you lucky to be in the Part 3 source photo? How did you work that out?

    Harmon

Now, Harmon, don't go suggesting a night job for hubby - I don't get nearly enough time with him as it is!! We're still newlyweds, remember? :P

As for being in the source photo, I reckon that's just the way it goes...being short usually means I get stuck in front and the picture comes out blurry. It's a great photo for practicing your creative-cropping techniques...!

  3. Anybody got a recipe for Humble Pie?

Humble PUD Pie? :( OK, you asked for it...

Harmon's Humble Pineapple Upside Down Pie

    2 pie crusts

    1 (20-1/2-ounce) can pineapple tidbits

    Water

    3 tablespoons cornstarch

3/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed, divided

    2 tablespoons lemon juice

    6 tablespoons butter, divided

    1/2 cup pecan halves

Drain pineapple. Add enough water to pineapple syrup to make 1-1/4 cups.

Combine cornstarch and 1/4 cup brown sugar in saucepan. Add lemon juice and pineapple syrup/water mixture. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture is thick and clear. Remove from heat and add 2 tablespoons butter, stirring until it melts. Add pineapple.

Place remaining 4 tablespoons butter in bottom of 9-inch pie pan. Place in 425-degree oven until butter is melted. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 tablespoon water. Arrange pecan halves, rounded side down, around bottom and sides of pan. Carefully line pan with pastry. Spoon in pineapple mixture. Adjust top crust, flute edges and cut vents.

To catch drippings, place pie on foil in the oven. Bake at 425 degrees for 25 minutes. Turn out, upside down, on serving plate immediately. Cool on rack before cutting. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Harmon - wewill expect to see this dessert on the table this Sunday...!! :D (Sounds delicious!)

Good gosh Dave, do I have to look after you too?

    da3f063f-246d-4364-8b6a-b36258f400f0.jpg

Yes you do and I thank you for it! :(

We'd be lost without our Harmon...you're just lucky we don't charge you for his services!! :D (Especially now that he's got such big numbers - congrats again, Uncle H.!)

We'll be getting some of our Colorado pics posted one of these days...I'm looking forward to seeing the magic he works with them!! Thanks again for letting us cache in your beautiful state!!

  5. Well, Once I was doing a cache in a popular park. I found the cache and it was a huge wooden block. This lady asked where we got it and I said in the water. The cache was 100% dry and obvious. She bought it though. I'm surprised I pulled it off!

My husband I were poking into a bush on a busy street - no big deal, the cars were moving fast enough that we didn't attract notice. But then a jogger came into view...so I started patting my legs and calling a pet's name..."Here Snickers! C'mon girl!!" Hopefully we looked more like pet owners than whackjobs staring into a bush. :D

Usually we just explain the sport - we've been lucky to actually find the caches when approached by security. Would be a bit stressful to get a DNF just then...!! :(

  6. If you are interested in this lesson please acknowledge and also mention what Photoshop version you have. Harmon
Interested! I have CS2 on one PC and Elements on another.

Well, do I get brownie points if I'm interested - but don't have Photoshop?? I work all my magic (ha!) with Paint and MS Word. Some day I'll have access to a primo program like Photoshop (or even Elements) and THEN I'll show 'em!!

  7. Here are some of our pics from this amazing hike (the logs are in process):

The same rock that's been posted, but from a different angle:

Miragee...taking pictures or searching for prey?

Wow, look at that full moon!!

C'mon, Harmon, work your magic!

  8. Miragee put together a great full-moon-over-Carveacer outing. Wonder if she's related to werewolves?
We all split just before midnight. <_<

Good plan, Miragee might be a ruthless werewolf. No wonder she lives out there not

    far from Carveacre.

Actually there's something quite unexpected in the shadows of your shot.

    8f7c0640-2c21-47ee-bd5f-1541948edbf3.jpg

What's that splash of bright-orange color along the right edge?

I'm pretty sure that bit of orange is the hive colony of the lipsucking carveacre boogerfly necromancer...!!

And didja all notice how Harmon waits till AFTER the hike to drop the bomb that sweet little Miragee might actually be a werewolf?? No wonder we had such a howling good time...!! (Seriously, everyone, thank you so much for an amazing adventure!! WeWillDo that again!!)

  9. Okay, boys and girls . . . here is a little more information about tomorrow night. :)

I think the moon will be coming up tomorrow night at about 7:20 p.m. The sun will set around 7:53 p.m. We will get to see a "sunset/moonrise" which could offer some great photography opportunities depending on where we are when we see the moon come up as the setting sun illuminates the wonderful rock formations.

What time works best for everyone? At 6:00, it will be a lot cooler out this way . . . :o

6:00 sounds good to us - wherever y'all wanna meet!! :)

Harmon - so where do I get some Lipsuckin' Booger Fly repellent?! :)

  10. Has what originally was to be a night hike under a nearly full moon turned into a late afternoon hike beginning at 4pm and likely to conclude before darkness to avoid all the monsters and critters of the night. Bummer. I would have been up for an early dinner and a little later start to add to the experience of hiking in the cooler temperatures and under the cover of darkness. Eerily fun.

I think that is what Miragee was actually going for, and I was going to hang around until after dark either way for photos near the wind caves themselves and maybe over near How Many Peaks area. I think a 6ish or so start time would give a better mood for the hike under mostly the moon on the way back from whatever turn-around point is choosen {Chevy No Va?}. The rocks up there should look awesome under the moonlight and for those that have concerns about darkness, it is quite amazing how much can be seen on a moon-lit night once your eyes adjust and you "see" correctly.

So I am game either way, but like lostguy would prefer a slightly later start getting mostly moonlight for the hike. But, will be hanging around up there after dark anyhow.

We're interested in the later start time, too - I've got a commitment earlier in the day, and the cooler temps/moonlight are big selling points. :anitongue:

  11. Gee, Harmon, you're really selling this event!!! :) Let's tick off the points...(oh no - I left out ticks!):

    1. Hiking in the dark (moonlight's great but face it - it's gonna be dark!!)

    2. 7 miles roundtrip (uphill all ways, based on previous experience - I vividly remember Chuy!'s Wild Turkey cache, which only FELT like 7 miles!)

    3. Last but not least you tell me there are Necromancers (lying in wait for the vertically challenged!) and sleeping snakes to contend with, too?! :o

Sheesh...seems the least a nice cowboy like you could do is offer to come along and protect me!! :)

  12. I'm thinking of going. 4PM sounds good. I can eat an early supper. What route are you thinking of taking? How far is it? How long will it take?

    ditto.. ;)

Actually if you guys wanted to we could meet for dinner. I can never get up early enough for breakfast since I live far away but I could make it for dinner.....

We're definitely interested but need some more info - as TrailGators said, how long of a hike are y'all planning? Dinner sounds good, too...we'll keep checking this thread for updates!!! ;)

  13. How big of a room is needed for a pizza event? The last couple were pretty busy and over 60 people. Giovannis Pizza is good and they support 'all you can eat' pizza, salad and drinks for $8 adults, and $6.50 for kids. Maybe ordering at the counter would be easier so money does not have to be tracked. I have a date reserved there but I am concerned that we have out grown the location.. any thoughts?

I thought we have not had one in a while, locally, and it would be great to see everyone. Hard to get out these days.

    TA

Are there plans to schedule a date/time for this, or has it been superceded by other plans...?? Inquiring minds (and tummies) want to know...! ;)

  14. Hello! My husband and I are planning a trip to Colorado for the first week of July 2007. Can you recommend other must-see caches near "hanging lake trail" cache (GC441A)?

We're also planning to visit my friend in Pueblo, CO; what are some good caches in that area?

    Thanks!

    Laurie

Well, hanging lake trail is a must-do hike to the top, even though the cache isn't all the way up. I'd recommend searching for the cache on the way up. You'll have the energy then.

As for others in the area, there are a bunch of fun ones. I enjoyed feeling silly at Pink Floyd.

Patron 'Aint will bring you to Doc Holiday's gravesite (kinda).

Back Packer was an enjoyable hike up to an interesting area.

That should get you started. There are some on the way (Westbound on I-70) that can break up the drive.

Team Laxson has given you some good choices. Also make sure you check out the Cardiff Coke Ovens.

Hello again! Just wanted to say thank you so much for everyone's cache advice; wish we hadn't had to walk away with a DNF on hanging lake trail but it was, otherwise, an absolutely AWESOME trip. :) We had the best vacation ever, and we especially want to thank those who placed caches all along the way (with a special shout-out to Grand High Pobah - thank you again for bringing us to the top of that mountain!!) If you're in the Pike's Peak area make sure you don't miss the awesome Curse of the Crystal (GC14225) mutli-cache, by KBsta - we thoroughly enjoyed it!!! We also want to thank Pioneer 'n' Tiff for giving us a handful of TBs to move eastward - felt good to get some mileage on them!!

We're going to have to go back to do the caches we missed, that's all there is to it!! The scenery in the western states just can't be beat - although we kinda expected cooler temps in the mountains!! It gets HOT in them thar hills!! ;)

  15. Miragee - wish you could come with us! Right now it looks like we'll take the northern route to Gypsum, then head to Pueblo and take the southern route to get home.

Tahosa - I actually have your "cache" bookmarked for future reference...it's definitely something we want to do some day! If you're anywhere near "hanging lake trail" (GC441A), or Pueblo, CO we might be able to work something out (can't help with the temps, though...doubt the first week of July is going to be "cool"!!).

FYI, pictures of the "hanging lake trail" actually determined our vacation destination...! :D

  16. How does everyone feel about logs containing just "TNLNSL" or "TFTC" and that's it?

They drive me crazy. I think it's a little bit rude, maybe that's just me.

We're still pretty wet behind the ears but we do put a fair amount of effort into our e-logs. (Not so much on the hard copies, though - usually just our name and the date/time.)

I try to limit cutting and pasting the same post to mutliple caches - but when I do, I still try to modify each one at least a little. After all, that's what I'm hoping others will do when we loose our caches on the world! :D

Reading the logs is one of my favorite parts of caching - I love learning about people and places, and creative logs are so much fun! Make me laugh, make me cry, but don't make me roll my eyes at yet another "TNLNSL" post! :D
