  1. Hello, I think the answer you are looking for is on page 18 of the 310 User manual. I have provided a link as it can be tedious to find. http://support.magellangps.com/support/assets/manuals/OM_eXplorist_310.pdf Hope this helps.
  2. Sorry, from you comments I understand you are looking for the intersection of three circles. The two iPhone apps I mentioned will work. If you have a program like MS Streets and Trips you can draw three circles and the intersection is your cache. Again there are other methods/techniques that will work. best regards.
  3. You might try Apps like: IGCT Pro or GCTools which will work on your iPhone. GSAK can also be used, if you are working with a laptop/pc. Do two simple projections, plot both coords, then draw lines on your mapping program and the intersection is your cache location. Your GPS will also allow you to do projections to get both sets of projected coords. These can be plotted on a map. Hope this helps. I am sure there are other techniques/methods to use, but these the ones that came to mind for me.
  4. Another place to put your request is the 1st cache of the E.T. series as a note.
  5. 1/30/2015 NiMH and NiCd batteries self discharge at a MUCH faster rate than alkaline batteries or Lithium batteries. In fact, at "room temperature" (about 70 degrees F) NiMH and NiCD batteries will self discharge a few percent PER DAY. I have been out using rechargeables and to my regret found out that the battery had discharged in my pack. It is my experience that unless you charge NiMH and NiCD shortly before your next outing, you will get short life, or the battery will be discharged. I can appreciate that some folks like rechargeables, but they have been a bust for me. I can grab my GPS with a set of extra Lithiums and be sure that it will have a full charge when I need it. The only green battery is one that is recharged by solar. Plugging into to 120v also leaves a footprint.
  6. Hello, I stock up for the year on Energizer Ultimate Lithium during the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Many stores use batteries as loss leaders and you can get some fantastic prices on batteries. Peoria Bill
  7. Hello, this may not help, but check to see if the GPS is not in Automotive Mode and is set to Geocaching profile.
  8. While Garmin may not be releasing many new handheld units, the are doing a land rush business on the automotive side of the business. I like to think I have kept abreast of their models, but they even have me confused on the automotive side. Seems they release a new model or series before I sort out the current units. Someone buying a new car gps has got to be lost in the numerous models. With regard to handheld units, I don't need a new model that frequently if they would put out good solid, tested, units with prompt attention to bugs. Word of mouth sells many more GPS units than all the marketing and advertising they do...witness the 60CSx If you make a better GPS the world will beat a path to you door. If Garmin is holding off releasing a new GPS because they are building in the quality and reliability users expect...great. I'll wait and stand in line to buy it.
  9. You said you only wanted updated maps. But please consider, the Nuvi500 is a 3.5in model GPS. Unless you can find a way to get free maps, I would seriously be thinking about getting something else. During Black Friday, one time map updates were going for $19.99 and lifetime for $49.99. You may still be able to find a similar bargain as we get closer to X-mas. There are quite a few 5in LMT models currently going for around $150.00. You can find cheaper GPS units, but eventually you will be in the same situation w/ outdated maps. Also, check out Ebay and Amazon as they sometimes offer refurbs that will meet your needs. All the best whatever you decide.
  10. I have returned 3 62S GPS units that were exhibiting the "shutdown on start" problem. I purchased a 62st and 62stc and neither unit has had this problem. Why these work and the 62s has problems, I cannot tell you. This is simply my experience based on my small sample. I have no confidence that I could start on an outing with the 62s and successfully complete it. My unit had the problem for the first time in Nevada out in the desert. I am glad there some recovery steps that you can take that seem to fix the problem. However, this is a Garmin problem that they need to resolve. If your car acted like your 62s, what would you do? ...Exactly!
  11. There was a time when Microsoft was a brand name that the average PC user was exposed to several time a day. Now, not so much. The PC is gone (Lenovo), the operating system has several competitors (Linux and derivatives)and now MS Streets and Trips has been chucked overboard. The program aged well and I am "guessing" that the financial hurdle to update it exceeded the expected profitability target. So, dedicated users, RV users, etc. will have to find another product. I hope that there is an entrepreneur out there that will recognize the possibilities to build on an existing customer base and put this program back on the road.
  12. Found this jar in a small tree next to a cache GL1Q3EJB in a Dallas, Texas cemetery in 2008.
  13. I only use GSAK to send to all my units.....never had a freeze after choosing a cache to go to. However, on both my 62S and Oregon 450 the units bogged down and shut off during the boot process ( once at the same time loading same file ), a master re set was required on both. Best I can figure it was a bad cache page. This also happened once using GSAK to load a poi macro to my Nuvi.....it turned out to be a problematic cache page. I have had three 62s units and the problem you describe of shutting down during the boot process was common to all three. I cannot tell you why, but I got the 62st and have done power trails with the unit and it has had no problems. The master boot, etc is usually a temporary fix. If you use the unit, the problem will return eventually. I know some folks that live with that problem. I fortunately bought from a company with a good return policy and wasn't stuck with a refurb/replacement of the same unit. Some folks will swear it is a great unit, but in all my years of caching the numbers that I encounter for this unit are high. Good luck with whatever you decide.
  14. Sad to hear the MS Streets and Trips will no longer available. I have bought the program every year it was available. Hopefully, someone will give it a second life. The alternative to ST is the Delorme Maps w/ a GPS locater. I'm not too familiar with it, but I guess I will have to learn. Sad in Peoria Peoria Bill :>)
  15. I ran across this statement while reviewing a site online. The author’s rant is blaming geocaching for the deterioration of this site. The site is online for everyone to see, so blaming geocachers is “assuming facts not in evidence”. Geocachers have guidelines that would tend to cause us not to destroy the area. Don’t understand comment about not respecting the site. Any similar stories or comments?? Rare B-17C Crash Site And now for my Soap Box Rant; Many historical sites and aircraft crash sites are becoming "geocache" sites. I personally believe this is in extremely bad taste, making a game of sites where men died serving their country. AND not to mention the additional traffic this activity brings to sites, many of these people that "geocache" have no clue or respect for these historical sites. Unfortunately there's a "geocache" located at this historical memorial site. http://www.ghosttownexplorers.org/aircraft/b17c/01.htm http://www.ghosttownexplorers.org/aircraft/aircraft.htm#b17c
  16. Hello I believe the 450 is a Garmin discontinued model. There are a lot of good GPS units available. Not to put any other models down, here are four solid performers for your consideration: Delorme PN60 - Comes with maps and delivers a solid performance 62st - Comes with maps and is also a solid performer and easily configurable to suit your caching needs. 78sc - Comes with coastal maps and is also a solid performer, floats, and you can add free Topo maps from GPSfiledepot.com. Etrex 30 - Very popular, compact, only good reports about this GPS unit. Shop for the best price. Again, there are other good units out there but these are sure bets to please you. Peoria Bill :>)
  17. A third 62s started exhibiting the fade out problem on start up yesterday. A call to Garmin today resulted in them telling me not to use GSAK, or using GSAK then loading files to the GPS via Basecamp. The support person indicated that they are getting a lot of these calls on newer GPS models. They offered to replace the GPS unit and could not promise that it would not happen again if I continued to use GSAK. Is something wrong with GSAK that is causing the problem, or does Garmin need to find a fix for this problem? Whomever is responsible, Garmin or GSAK, please address this issue!
  18. Noted the same problem as Briansnat with my 62S and 64S models. In addition to always trying to take you to the nearest geocache while navigating to a waypoint, the screen is resistant to paging to the map page. I like the new GPS features with the 62S and 64S models, but the GPS still has to do the basic operations well. Hopefully, Garmin will find a way to address these concerns. Peoria Bill :>)
  19. Take a look at the following if you have not already done so: http://support.garmin.com/support/sw/supportPage/display?locale=en_US&topicIDs={159aaa00-b9cf-11de-73d6-000000000000} Sounds like some sort of driver problem if PC won't recognize the gps unit. There is a Garmin number to call for help also. Hope this helps.
  20. Hello PN60 is a mature product and works intuitively well. It does a good job of routing here in the states, but I'm not sure about Mexico. It handles .gpx files differently and when you load gpx files on the Delorme, you may need to select a file because the gps may be pointed towards another file. When on the Geocache page, select MENU to see File... Select Open and select File. You can have numerous gpx files stored on the PN60 and chose which one you want to load, which somewhat frees you from having to go back to another SD card or laptop as often. Situational awareness should be exercised a little more. Hope you find some good caches.
  21. I guess I could ask the original post question is reverse? 1. Why is a young guy out chasing plastic containers in the woods? 2. Geocaching seems tame compared to some activities that he should be physically able to tackle. 3. The question is biased by his opinion of what "older" people should be doing! 4. The query is a bit rude and insulting. So, what is a young guy doing chasing plastic instead of .....?
  22. Hello, Trip is roughly 756miles. The limit for a cache along a route is 500mi. So, you'll have to abbreviate the query or make two. The caches you will most likely choose will be a subset of this query. I like to pick up virtuals, earthcaches, rest stop caches, etc. Even, if you don't find the "most" interesting, you'll have lots to choose from. Hope this helps. Peoria Bill :>)
  23. I have experienced the 62s shutting down before it fully powers up. Works for awhile, the suddenly shuts down. Subsequent reloads of firmware, resets and web updater have not been able to correct the problem. Even removed SD card and all .gpx files with no success. The early 62S seems to work fine. The later units are the ones that seem to have various problems as described above and in my writeup. If you bought one, use it now, before your warranty expires. This has happened on two units. I am currently on my third unit. Previously described this problem in "62S Caveat Emptor" post. This is distressing because I am a Garmin fan.
  24. I hope it was only a bad .gpx file. The time to tell the cacher is when the file is loaded, not two days into an extended cache hunt. I was fortunate and had a backup gps. I know we should always have a compass and map, but that is not reality for a lot of cachers. "Don't trust your life to a plastic box with wires" is the advice often given. If Garmin could check the file integrity and offer an option to delete the file, that would help prevent this situation. Again, I don't know exactly what the problem was. I do know that it is no longer my problem. I hope the new GPS works better. Peoria Bill :>)
