  1. Instead of a random push distribution of virtual caches to those who qualify, perhaps a system whereby cachers who qualify are notified and have to "accept" a virtual cache within a specific period. Then all 4,000 would presumably get placed. I would not turn one down, but I am pretty sure there are others not interested in placing a virtual cache.
  2. Hey AFK, Don't forget I am owed a ladies size L tee shirt from the event. Two emails to AFK have gone unanswered. Was shorted in the VIP package. PeoriaBill
  3. The 60csx is running $125-$225 on Ebay. You may find some sub $100 units and those will still be in the bidding process or parts only. I am not a seller of GPS units, but as a last resort I might be willing to part with a working 60csx. Best of luck in your search.
  4. Maybe check Garmin Express or Webupdater for any older updates you missed. Worth a quick check.
  5. Not about Lab Caches per se, but about how to organize the search for them. As you can see from the attached picture, it is all but impossible to find them in some organized fashion. It would be nice to grab all nearby ones instead of having to backtrack later. This is Washington, D.C. but I believe it would apply to a lot of other built up areas. Has anyone found a better way?
  6. GARMIN 67, 67i and Etrex SE Noticed that Garmin has introduced a new GPS, the 67 and 67i. They have also introduced an updated version of the basic yellow Etrex model. The new slogan is that Garmin takes you “deep into the woods” or words to that effect. Sounds great. I just hope Garmin brings me back out of the woods! Couple of observations on the new units: The 67i like the 66r is a fixed lithium battery rechargeable unit. It offers some very impressive run time of 180+hours in GPS mode and over 400hrs in expedition mode. Sounds great, but I still want to be able to plug in a battery. The need to be able to plug in a battery is hard wired into the DNA. The 67i has only five of the major satellite systems, while the 67 includes Glonass for a total of six. No reason given. No mention of loading compressed .ggz files, but I’m assuming they have the capability. Maps are TOPO. They offer various versions of Navigator, Marine, Hunting etc. at about $86 each. For $599.00 I think they should give you whatever maps you want. Now days, map data is no longer a proprietary commodity as the info is widely available. I have not heard why this GPSr is better than its predecessors? Is it faster, more reliable, antenna better or is the only change that it is now multi gnss (satellite systems)? Reach technology is not new anymore. Product support is a major part of any product release. How will Garmin take care of these units? Longer warranty, exchanges, refurbished units? The battery will eventually need to be replaced. Since this baby is locked up tight does that mean it is a throw away or is there a way to replace it and give it many more years of reliable service? The NUVI is a prime example of the battery failing in three or four years and the units practically being given away on Ebay. Next time they release a product that costs $600, they need to release the product support package/plans at the same time. What item would you buy and not know this information?? Last topic: The new Etrex SE. Same question as No 5. It has all six gnss systems, but still a non map background. It is still a basic Etrex or a featureless Etrex 22/32. I like Garmin and if I want to keep geocaching I don’t have a lot of choice. The above comments are my impressions after reading the new Garmin product advertisement.
  7. Installing Pocket Queries from Geocaching.com 1. After getting the pocket query results, save the attached zip file to your computer. 2. Unzip the pocket query file. There will be two extracted files, one with a xxxxxxx.gpx filename and one with a xxxxxxx-wpts.gpx filename. 3. Connect your Magellan eXplorist GC receiver to your PC using a USB cable. 4. When prompted, select "Connect to PC". 5. On your PC, open the directory where the files are stored. 6. Drag the file xxxxxxx.gpx to the 'Geocaches' folder and the file xxxxxxx-wpt.gpx to the 'Waypoints' folder. 7. The data will be transferred to your receiver and the geocaches are ready to use. (You need to disconnect or reboot the receiver to exit the "Connect to PC" screen
  8. I have Delorme Topo NA version 10.0 if you are interested. PeoriaBill
  9. Hello, I'll have to check some boxes, but I may have some. Also have PN40, PN60 and PN60w if you are interested. PeoriaBill
  10. Nice to see everyone getting a Lab Cache. Now with this exponential growth, the tools to manage Labs will necessarily have to improve. PeoriaBill :>)
  11. Open Street Maps used to be great. I don't know what has happened, but you can't select maps like in the past. You have to minimum download a whole state/country. When you make the request the queue is incredibly long. (This request is #104839 in the queue. The delay is approximately 436.8 days.) I am just passing along something another cacher posted, but it seems to at least give you a map. Try this site: https://garmin.opentopomap.org. Good luck with your search.
  12. Thanks for posting this topic. This is good advice for new and old cachers alike.
  13. Entschuldigen sie mir, das ich hab sie auf English antwortet. Mein Deutsch is nicht so gut. If you have a 64s and are using a micro SD card, then you will have two subdirectories. In your case most likely E and F. In your F subdirectory create a GARMIN folder. Under the GARMIN folder create a GPX and a GGZ folder. Have your program send either the .gpx or .ggz folders to their respective folders. Your gps unit will now recognize the appropriate file and should function properly. Regards, PeoriaBill
  14. Hello. I believe EasyGPS plays well with the 76csx. You will need to select it from the available models in he program and send your caches. I am assuming you can run a pocket query to get the .gpx file you need. If you haven't done that, then start there with the area you want to cache. Load the .gpx file into Easygpx and send it up to the limit of your gps unit. Older gps units have a few limitations, but should be fine for most geocaching. I've found hundreds of caches with that model. Best of luck, PeoriaBill.
  15. This is a macro that is very useful. With its functionality halted by HQ it doesn't work. I like software that works whomever comes up with it. Be it HQ or someone else. At least turn it on till you have something better to replace it with!
  16. Here is how I carry my GPS units around. I use the Garmin neoprene case for the GPSMAP series while caching. I toss it in the zippered bag for travel. I use the hard case for the 66 series while traveling and use the unit 'as is' for caching. Both units have clear screen protectors. For me, I like the extra protection especially since these GPS units are not exactly cheap. Hope this helps. PeoriaBill
  17. Pulled out my old Magellan Explorist GC and had no problem using it with GSAK. It holds 10,000 caches. In GSAK you'll have to select the correct model. Did not try EasyGPS, but I believe it will also load caches to your GPS. Regards, PeoriaBill
  18. On compass page select menu, change dashboard, and select Recreational or Small Data Fields. Hope this helps.
  19. Mine kept turning off and I would have to hit the power button to get it to come back on. I turned off the power save feature and at least it doesn't annoy me with that anymore. FYI
  20. This weed works little spikes into your shoes, socks and is a real pain. I have started wearing gators and/or shoes without cloth or fabric on the sides or instep. Lots of this in the arid southwest.
  21. Excellent change. I had to move one of mine due to a new veterans monument and this would have made it much easier. CO's don't change coords too often, but when they do, this will make it simpler. PeoriaBill :>)
  22. Just a couple of points. Sounds like you've already gotten lots of advice. 1. Make sure you wait till the file is completely loaded. I have found that if you jump the gun and disconnect the gps early unpredictable things can happen. Also properly disconnect the gps from the computer and get permission to disconnect it. 2. Make sure file names contain only letters and numbers and no punctuation or spaces. Sometimes this file will not load and you get no indication this is a problem. Hope this helps.
