  1. The e-mail saying people had commented on this thread arrived twice. Deleted them all, only one person e-mailed me.
  2. It has come up again on someone else's cache that I am watching. The logger has over 2,700 finds so not a newbie thing. Did not log it from a computer as shows last time he logged in as 26th December and this cache was logged in the last hour. I will go delete the duplicates (on my caches). My concern is the person logging is doing nothing wrong and their phone/device for some reason is sending the information twice. Thanks for your replies.
  3. This is my cache http://coord.info/GC16CYC You will note the person who logged a find on the 1st of January has two logs, yet when I go to their profile it only shows on the list of found geocaches once. This is the third time I have seen this happen recently (each time on a different cache). With the other two the wording was exactly the same for both logs. I want to delete one of the logs but am concerned it is a glitch and both will disappear. See 26th December on this one http://coord.info/GC17F6X and on this one too http://coord.info/GC1J2RT
  4. I don't know when the guidelines changed but my expectations as a challenge cache owner and finder of other peoples challenge caches is that you complete the requirements before signing the log. Luckily my one challenge cache is placed so far off the beaten track that no one has bothered driving to it unless they qualify. In fact when people are driving through I doubt it would even show up in their PQs it is so far off the beaten track. If someone from overseas was to e-mail me and say my cache was part way through their trip and they wanted to sign it before they qualify as long as they meet all the requirements in that one trip I would probably be ok with that. I have never had any one ask.
  5. There was nothing wrong with the old design, it did the job. There are plenty of other things that could have programmer time spent on them rather than design. As for mobile enabled isn't that what apps are for? There are numerous ones out their including an official one (which I paid money for). When I am using a laptop or desktop computer I expect a site suited for that not a mobile device when there is a separate service for those users. Getting to the official app it would be nice if it didn't automatically log finds as if we all lived in the same timezone as Seattle. I would like to specify the date I found it, the same as if I am sitting at a computer logging my finds.
  6. Not sure what you mean by this. I tried posting a note on one of my archived caches with today's date mid morning here (NZ) and it was still logged as the previous day (=American time). I was using my iPod touch with latest iOS and latest GC app loaded. At least with this one it does seem to open properly where as I gave up using the older version because of it's aversion to opening.
  7. I won't ignore a puzzle cache because it is a micro. It just increases your chances of not getting a favourite point from me. Then again I put a bit of effort into my on-line logs and haven't yet just said TFTC. LPC and guardrail caches are still not that common in the areas I cache, so coming across one every 500 or 600 caches doesn't bother me. If your final has something to do with the actual puzzle you increase your chances of me awarding a favourite point. I found a cache recently where although the cache was small (a magnetic key holder) and it was at a bus stop (could be considered boring) I still smiled as I approached GZ as I saw something at the location that linked in with the puzzle and showed the CO had put some thought both into the puzzle and the location. That is the sort of puzzle cache I like as not every cache let alone puzzle cache is going to take you to an amazing location.
  8. You can email contact@geocaching.com and ask them to manually apply the souvenir to your profile. I've had to do so in the past, and they added it within a day or two. Thanks
  9. Hi I was wondering what I should do to get a souvenir I believe I qualify for but isn't showing up on my profile.
  10. Another thing that you can do is change the format of the cache name before down loading it to your GPS. A friend of mine puts an X at the beginning of the name of any cache that he has loaded corrected coordinates for. Back when most GPS's only allowed around 8 or 10 characters in the name he used to drop the GC at the beginning of the GC code and add extra letters at the end telling him what size and type of cache it was. He also created a macro that shows how many caches you have found in each part of New Zealand and maps it. Which comes in useful when trying to find out if you qualify for the challenge cache I placed. I love working out which caches I want to find and then opening a map of just those caches. It means I can have it show just the ones I'm interested in, some puzzles showing, some not. Flag ones to be solved at home so they don't show up, but include the others and the ones I have solved. Also there is usually more than one way to achieve the same outcome depending on how you prefer to use the program.
  11. I just had a quick look but couldn't find any either. Luckily for me I don't use it to cache with just use it to check logs or hints while I'm hunting as it is quicker than going between the screens on my GPS.
  12. I haven't read all 6 pages of this thread or any of the other threads out the about how bad it is that some people are better than others at grabbing FTF. Any way here is my 2c as a CO. I almost drive my husband nuts when I place a cache and have to *wait* for it to be published. Then it gets worse, it's published and I want it found now! and logged on-line now! I double check the cache page and see if I have received an e-mail. OH FOR GOODNESS SAKES WHY HASN'T ANYONE LOGGED A FIND YET!!! ANYONE!!!
  13. Challenges IMHO would have been much better over with Waymarking. There were some very basic issues with them that may have contributed to there slow up take. I "placed" two. One was never done, I don't think anyone knew about it. The other was accepted by a couple of people but as owner I was not notified by e-mail and only found that out be accident. I completed one challenge. Yes only one there were hardly any placed here and it was the only one within 80km of home. Not surprised they got rid of them, did get the e-mail and don't really care. *I* know I completed one. It actually was a challenge for me to complete it and did get me to do something out side my comfort zone. I have the photo taken by my husband on my G+ profile.
  14. These two comments were the kinds of things going though my head when I posted my original question. OK now for a bit more info. The cacher involved is a dedicated cacher with quality caches and the nicest person you would want to meet. When I posted this item I asked for comments. I really was looking for comments because I had already written to the cache owner and had received s reply. > REPLYI've considered that. The cache is a premium members only cache. People will have to get over the mental block of touching it. I'm expecting a little chatter, but this cache is safe. Adults can judge for themselves, kids aren't usually premium members. There are far more dangerous caches/hikes out there.Tx for bringing it up though.I'm just glad I came up with something original for around here.I have since received a phone call from him and he may be re thinking the situationPAul I am a premium member and I take my children with me caching. No they are not PMs but I am and don't skip PM caches just because they are with me. Should all dangerous caches be archived because people take kids caching? Depends on what you define as dangerous. Climbing a tree, near a cliff, then no they don't need archiving as we/parents can filter by attributes any which are placed in areas not suitable for children to visit. Caches placed on or in items I wouldn't want my children to touch if I were not there because of their potential danger is not a good idea. It sends mixed messages to put a cache in a container that clearly says 'Do not touch' I would log a DNF on it unless the container was modified in some way to indicate it was a cache. On the other hand I would consider using a modified container for the final of a themed puzzle cache. I'm thinking scrap off the word NOT so it reads POISON DO TOUCH and having a theme about music by who else but Posison. Or scrap off all the letters, relabel it and have a rat themed cache Q1 when was the first rat trap invented ....
  15. Can't access them here either, ok that cuts down on the number of puzzle caches I can solve, maybe I should log off and go make a cache.
  16. You could always just use the google maps to find the power trails. Zoom out a bit and move around it shouldn't be too hard to spot a solid line of icons in a line normally in the middle of nowhere. As to making one decide how many caches you want in it. Collect a whole pile of (normally) small containers, try and have some variety of size and shape. Prep them all with log books rather than folded sheets of A4 that won't last long. It is quite easy to turn one A4 sheet of paper into a small log book that will last longer. Print of and laminate the 'You have found a geocache note' for those caches bigger than a nano that can fit one. I do mine double sided, half message on one side half on the other so they are small enough to fit in the lid of 200ml containers that are a common hide here in New Zealand. Next look at your map again to find an area without any caches where there is a road or walking track on which you can place a cache every 161m (sorry can't remember how many feet that is). If I was do one I wouldn't find a row of power polls and make each cache exactly the same size and hide location on each pole, but that's me. A mixture of bushes, fence posts, power polls, rocks etc can make a power trail a bit more interesting and make the hunter earn their smilies. If you take the containers out unnumbered or labeled it would be easy enough at each site to pick the best shape and size for the hide. Good luck I have a power trail of 80 near home I am saving for a day when I can go out with another cacher/s and make it more fun. Add a bit of competition to it to see who from the group can retrieve the most caches.
  17. Hi Kevin Just a couple of suggetions for the Auckland area. One Tree Hill has a number of caches and lots of tourists visit it. Also you could take the ferry across to Rangitoto or Waiheke Islands, also North Shore area. I like searching for earthcaches and going from there. Many of them in Auckland also have a traditional near by. New Zealand has a fairly good coverage of caches so for places outside of Auckland to visit I would decide what noncaching activities you would like to visit and you will probably find a cache near by. Rotorua (first cache in NZ was placed here), Coromandle (beaches and bush), Northland (beautiful weather), Lake Taupo (largest lake in the country), Wellington (Te Papa national museum), Napier (great Art Deco buildings) and that is only a few suggestions for the North Island. One could go on about the South Island but it would depend on how much travel you want to do once your here. If you can get to the South Island many visitors recommend spending more time there than in the North Island. Hope you enjoy your trip down under. Catherine
  18. Sorry if this repeats what someone else has said but I've only read 1/3 of all the posts. People who are *not* members will only see *some* of the information. This does not include the coordinates or the map. So they have to feel interested enough to click on the link and then create an account before they find where your cache is. Then and only then can they (if they can be bothered) go and try to find it. It saddened me that you have changed your caches to members only, I have paid for pm just am just not paid up at the moment. How about waiting untill someone actually clicks on the like button before reacting. I don't see that this is as big of a concern is what seems to have been made of it. Unfortunately this is what they have choosen so this is what I'll make use of while still supporting those who would prefer an in house sollution that could be usefull as a search function instead of just an add on that you can see when looking at a cache page. GC please create a rating system that is actually usefull rather than just window dressing.
  19. I'm starting to agree. It can't be hard at all to have a simple thumbs up button. I did notice that after I "Like" it, I can click it again to remobe my name. Can you do me a favor, I'm going to go "Like one of your Caches, tell me what you see?? http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...e7-8306c2185803 Had a look - all I see is that '2 people like this. Be the first of your friends.' So I'm glad not everyone is going to see my name. Do still have to wonder if the owner will see who likes it or not.
  20. I know of a cache that is placed exactly like this. Was telling my sister about geocaching and her first thought was that her two oldest at boarding school would enjoy it and give them something to do other than hanging out at malls. We looked their school hostels up on line and there was one on the side of the street right outside her daughters hostel.
  21. Hi not an urgent as I should be off the computer by now but I got the following when I tried to bring up newest cache list for my home 'state' also got same looking page when I typed in a cache number/code to try and bring up the cache page from the main/home Gecocaching page Server Error in '/' Application. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Input string was not in a correct format. 22. YIPPEE IT WORKED!!! ssshhh don't wake the baby he has finaly gone to sleep! thank you for your help, it is still not perfect but at least now I can see the real things I want to change and not just incorrect formating because of " being missed
  23. check the highlighted portions. you're missing the closing quotes (") there. that's what's causing the HTML tidyer to reformat the rest of the page. the same mistake is present in pretty much all other links as far as i can see. Thank you now I have something I can go and do that makes me feel like I might be getting somewhere - hopefully.
  24. ok found 1 mistake an extra </td> at the bottom of the one I copied from but that doesn't explain the rest
