  1. 3 Blondes & Me, As far as I know, PQs have never had archived caches. I believe you do get temporary archived caches with them, and that may be what you were thinking about. I think both temp archived and perm archived show up the same in GSAK.
  2. Help! I tried getting some caches outside of the US through a PQ recently. Now I can't use two of my PQs any more! Both of these seem stuck on the Country option. If I select the state radio button and select a state or states, it switches back to country after I submit the PQ. It may not change back until after I try running the PQ to see what shows up. No matter how I set these PQs, they come up unable to find any caches--even with a country selected. I'd rather not delete these PQs--I like to keep my old numbers as long as I can (I did lose two or three low numbered PQs that way in the past. ) Thanks for any help!
  3. Clyde's option works as well. I was about to do the same, but I had a lot of old Pocket Queries with over 500 archived caches listed as available in Ohio alone. Of course most won't have this many to deal with.
  4. I have a huge database in GSAK myself. I've had the same problem with Watcher before as well. On a trip to Cincinnati, we searched for several caches without knowing they were archived due to this problem. Fortunately I came up with a solution fo this with GSAK earlier today. Hopefully something like this will work with Watcher as well. I tend to add one state at a time to GSAK, so it might not work as well for you. First, make a filter similar to the pocket queries you'll be loading and export it as a GPX file. Next, you'll need to edit the GPX file with a text editor like Word Pad. Search and replace 'archived="False"' with 'archived="True"'. Save the file again and reload the file into GSAK using the Always option instead of Newer Only. At this point all of those caches will be archived in GSAK. You'll need to load the new pocket queries with Always still selected. After this your list should match the site's list. You can switch back to Newer Only after this. Unless you know there are some recently archived caches you probably won't need to repeat this for a while. So... is there any reason I don't want to use the Always option for this? It seems to work great for me so far and I still seem to have all the old logs, etc. I hope this helps you!
  5. I'm having the same problem. My guess is the above post answered its own question... There are probably a lot of people that run a PQ on Friday (as well as the rest of the weekend) that don't normally run them during the week. I'm sure as it keeps warming up in the northern hemisphere that this will cause trouble for timely weekend PQs. For the most part the system's working great with sending PQs out early in the day. I'm spoiled lately! Hopefully they can come up with a cure for the occasional late/missed days.
  6. Congratulations! Now that our 10th anniversary cache is gone, we just have to wait about ten years for you to place one.
  7. Ooh! Event! We'll be there! I love the idea of Sutton myself. Hopefully people can get some new caches in the area before the event! Unfortunately we probably won't be able to get any caches out this time. Man In The Wild
  8. I'm 5'10" and I've found a couple caches that were hard for me to reach. If my wife had gone without me, she may not have been able to retrieve or even find the cache. I do like the idea of a cache hidden like that--as long as they're not all like that. Whie she might not be able to reach the cache the way I would, it would encourage her to be creative in finding and retrieving the cache.
  9. Great! Thanks. I just ran a few counties through BMGPX and it looks fine so far.
  10. Will the new format Datasheets work properly with BMGPX and Watcher?
  11. Help! I love the way PQ's are set up now so I can have the site remember up to 20 PQs! Just one problem for me... an old PQ I set up using 1/1/1968 as the start date is now uneditable! Because the date is before 2000, I can't edit or delete the PQ (I prefer editing.) I chose 1/1/1968 because the oldest cache date I've seen is from 1968 in Michigan (it was still there the last time I checked.) Can anything be done to fix this problem? Thanks for the help!
  12. We ran across something hidden in a gate post just like this recently while searching for a cache in Ashland, KY. I believe it was just a bottle of water for anyone that might want it (although none of us wanted to test to be sure.) On the bottle was written something about ELIXIR and that we could drink it... We just left the bottle there, so if you search for the Artillery cache, you may just find it like we did!
  13. $31 for a camp site? Sounds a bit expensive--or is that for two nights? Anyway... We've had so much fun in the Lancaster area in the past that we'd love to join the fun. It doesn't look too likely now, but we'll sure try to find a way to be there!
  14. Mike: I agree--it's much more likely that they'll just mention there are caches, or x caches in the park(s). We talked with Keystone Approver while in PA recently, and I think he said the parks supply official geocaching stickers (the green ones from this site) for all of the caches in their parks. I don't expect WV to pay for the stickers, and I'm sure we'd get a lot of complaints if we had to pay a lot for stickers (which I doubt would be the case.) I do think it would be a good way to identify what the caches are by attaching some sort of official sticker. I recently bought a number of the cache stickers and plan to eventually use them on a number of our caches. So, have you heard anything new? Is there anything you'd like us to do? Eli: Sure you'll be back...
  15. Looks like a nice site--we'll have to check that next time we go camping/caching. If I ever update my Curiosity Collection web site (www.maninthewild.com) I'll be sure to add a link to your site. Glad to see your cache is back up and that our coordinates helped. We hope to meet you sometime caching or at a caching event.
  16. For the most part this sounds good. I'm glad we haven't had to deal with all the trouble some other areas have had dealing with their park systems. After seeing how some other states handle caches in the parks (mostly OH, PA, and WI,) this looks like they've paid a lot of attention to the others and will have a good system set up for cache placement in their parks. If nothing is changed, will there be a charge for the permits? They sound a lot like vehicle inspection stickers (or license plate stickers) or like stickers other states have for using their state parks (so nice not having to pay to visit our parks here!) I'd also love to see caches added to the park brochures. I know some have complained in the past (probably from other states) about letting too many people know about the caches leading to caches disappearing (and we've had a few around here disappear recently.) Maybe if they do list caches available in parks they might give the hider a chance to have theirs not listed, or just mention caching as one of the things you can do in the park and list www.geocaching.com as a place to find more information. (I'd want to take my chances and have mine listed given a choice.) Thanks for the info Mike! Tony
  17. quote:Originally posted by Touchstone:Wow! Now I've got PDA envy . You guys have PDA's with enough memory to download pictures? I've got an old Palm Pro with 1 mb. How small are the images you're putting on your PDA? They're resized to fit the screen and number of colors, but Plucker can also grab the full sized picture (which geocaching limited to 100k) and display when you click on the thumbnail. To give you an idea of how this can work, I have an 8MB Visor with a 128MB Compact Flash card. I think a GPX spun with Spinner then run through Plucker will take about 1MB-2MB for 500 cache descriptions. (I have a few 1000 cache files on my card running 3-4 MB in size.) Some day I'll get a nice new PDA with a fast processor and a nice color hi-res display... what I have now is wonderful. The newer PDAs would still make a big difference (I bet XMap Handheld maps would be a lot more useful--they're too slow on my PDA.)
  18. WVDan--you'll run into us as well as Eli at Quest Master's event. Of course, I don't know if it's possible to get you caching outside of WV (or DX for that matter.) My hope is to grab caches near Lord Fairfax on Saturday. Otherwise, I'm all for another WV event. I am working now, but I have weekends off. Queenfish works weekend nights, so any other campouts will be tough, but a normal picnic should work fine as long as it's not in the eastern panhandle. We'd love a chance to meet you and the other cachers from the rest of the state.
  19. Ok, I've now been stuck twice. Once while caching recently, and another when I went to pick up my wife from work before a day of caching. The day we picked her up, I was driving up the small winding mountain road to her work when an ambulance came down the other way. I pulled over to let the ambulance by, and once it had passed, I discovered the front passenger tire was slipping so bad that no amount of rocking was going to fix the problem. Nobody could push the car either way either. Eventually someone drove by with a truck and chains and towed me out of the mud--downhill! I felt like I was rolling towards him and couldn't stop, so he ended up dragging my car across the road with my brakes on. He was a bit upset about that--I didn't realize he planned to pull me that far and I sure didn't want to hit his truck! Another time, we were at a cache and when going to the wrong parking area, I destroyed a new tire on a broken fence post I didn't see. I managed to change that tire on the dirt 'road' there. The other day we had our second major car problem at a cache. We have found 395 caches, and only twice have we had trouble like this at a cache area. Both caches were hidden by the same person and are the only two caches they have hidden in WV. Bad enough seeing someone have trouble at one of your caches, but twice??? We took the wrong dirt road first and ended up climbing well above the cache area. Then we went back and took the right road (a little after dark by now.) We've driven the car on much worse roads, but something on the road hit the underside just right--we left a couple puddles of oil in the road. We turned the car off when the oil light went on--about 100 feet from the cache. We walked from this 'ghost town' to the nearest home which was fortunately only .3 miles away. They turned out to be very friendly and helpful and when AAA couldn't get us a tow until the following day, they called someone that got us out much quicker. The damage turned out to be a punctured oil filter. Amazing how much trouble you can get in with an oil filter! We didn't get a chance to grab the cache--it was all tall weeds, etc, and they made it very clear that there are a lot of poisonous snakes in the area. We'll be back when they aren't!
  20. No fair. You go to the cache and get this kind of entertainment. All we found was a bunch of rubbery things. We're just waiting to see what Eli does with those...
  21. 2000??? How is that possible??? Sure is a nice big number! Congratulations StayFloopy! We'll have to get together next time we come to NJ (hopefully it won't just be two hours at night next time.) We'll probably double our numbers in a couple days caching with you. Keep getting those caches, and I'll keep looking for your Georges! Also, thank you for being one of the people that got me started on Geocaching!
  22. Sure... for a state like WV, just set up a pocket query to download WV with no limits on dates, etc. Of course, MN would be a different story since you have more than 500 caches... I do have the whole state of MN available if you'd like me to send it to you (I put it together with Watcher.) You'd be better off to create your own by using two pocket queries and Watcher to combine them since my file is a little over a month old. I did have hopes of taking a side trip to MN on our visit to WI last month.
  23. There are now 200 caches in West Virginia! #200 had great timing too--it's a math themed cache. Now if we really go wild and place a bunch more we can get close to our neighboring states! (Hey, we have more than DC!)
  24. We're the opposite of WWW... we love the drive to the cache and caching itself is way ahead of the hiking (we aren't known for hiking without a cache to hunt.) Thanks to geocaching for giving us a reason to exercise! We cleared out a 5 mile radius from my dad's house in Milwaukee (ok, part of that is made easy by Lake Michigan taking a big chunk of that circle) on a recent visit. The only cache we didn't log a find on in that area is one we left (with plenty of people helping us to watch the cache.) We have about 100 more finds than anyone else living in West Virginia, but we're fifth or sixth place for most West Virginia caches found. Like I said, we love the drive to the caches. DC, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Louisville, Denver, and many other wonderful places we've driven to for caching. Every which way but South for some reason. We have about the same number of finds as Leprechaun, and our distance on the first page is similar--44.1 miles at the bottom of the page. Oops. We found that one today. There are now a number of caches on that page that we hope to find soon. Also many of the closer caches have are now fairly high in the terrain rating. We'll grab them eventually--it takes a bit to talk me into climbing some of these hills around here (even though I'll hide some on hills.)
