  1. I just got an e-mail from someone trying to post a Whispering Giant. Every time he hits save or submit, his latitude minutes revert to 00.000 and he is not allowed to post. Does anyone know why this would happen? I'd like to help him get his find posted, but I have no ideas what to tell him. Also, this same guy posted a Whispering Giant in Lincoln, Nebraska with pictures but the listing on the category page shows no picture available. Any ideas on that issue? Is this guy just unlucky or can we offer him some advice for his issues?
  2. ggmorton, I see you experimented with this on some of your own waymarks. Does this archive the Waymark with all photos, descriptions, and logs in tact or does it make it disappear completely? At this point, I have nothing to archive, but in my Whispering Giants category it appears many of the sculptures succumb to harsh weather over time. If a logged sculpture is removed from the physical world, I would still like to have a description and information on the Waymarking site.
  3. I've been wondering the same thing. My Whispering Giants category recently received a list of all the sculptures created by the artist. We're finding that many of these have succumbed to the elements over the past few years. Some of the sculptures that have been logged are in sad shape and may need to be removed. When this happens, I would like to be able to archive those sites that no longer contain a sculpture. As group leader, I should be able to do this but I can't figure out how. Is this a feature we have now? If not, will it be included in a future release?
  4. Are there any other potential officers out there? I guess State Farm used to have some listed on their website. All I could find was their top 5 funny intersections in America. Excerpt from State Farm press release These are the types of things I'm looking for. What could we call the ones like Ho and Hum or Grinn and Barrett?
  5. Thanks for the information about the now removed Giants. I have marked those Giants as removed on our Whispering Giants detail page and given credit to those of you who passed the information along.
  6. The Whispering Giant Sculptures category is up to 10 Waymarks, but I would really like to see it keep growing. buffaloman from Churchville, MD just logged Maryland's Whispering Giant. While he was visiting it, he had a chance to visit with Peter Wolf Toth, the sculptures' artist. He provided buffaloman with a list of Whispering Giants throughout North America. I posted the list on the category page, but I'll also post it here. If there is one near you, please take the time to Waymark it. All that is needed are coordinates and a good photo of the sculpture. If you can identify the type of wood and find the date it was dedicated that would be even better, but it's not required to log one. Here's the list: NOTE: Numbers assigned in order of completion. 1. 7. I think the George Harrison crossroad would be great. For this category, it will be the variables that make or break it. I agree that we need one for Famous Names, Opposites, and Pairs. I would like to come up with more, but I don't know how to put them in words. That's why I'm looking for potential officers that would like to take a part in defining the category. Since this category will be subjective by definition, I think it needs officers that want to work collaboratively to come up with the standards for what makes an interesting intersection and then hold the submissions to those standards. I think this could be a very fun category, but it will be one that takes some thought and work on the part of the officers. It won't always be cut and dried as to what qualifies as it is with my Whispering Giant Sculptures category. I think if we set good standards, it will be one of those categories where Waymarks are prevelant enough that anyone can find one, but there won't be so many that there is one on every corner Please help me out if you're interested! We just need one more officer.
  8. I would like to start a new category for intersections where the names of the streets meeting make an interesting statement. These could be a famous name (I was inspired by the corner of Sherlock Rd. and Holmes Rd. in my town), two items that are often paired (Strawberry Rd. and Shortcake Ln.), a juxtoposition (Front St. and Back Rd.) or a surprising statement (I know I've seen one, but can't think of one now.) I have created a group and I am currently looking for members that would like to take an active role defining variables and logging requirements. The group currently has open enrollment, but if you would like an e-mail invitation, just let me know. Please post any questions you have and I will try to visit the forum regularly to answer them. If you are ready to help out, please join the Interesting Intersections group.
  9. Thanks for the clarification. I, too, thought that this thread was related to the Steakhouses up for peer review. I thought it was a great category idea, but was disappointed to see an empty category and voted no. I look forward to the Superb Steak 'stablishments category yet to come. If it appears with great descriptions and variables as shown above, I will definitely vote yes.
  10. I'm trying to figure out what the ettiquite for logging Waymarks is. Since this is different than Geocaching, should users log a waymark each time they visit? Since the page displays the date of last visit, I think it would be beneficial to log every visit. Also, if you create a waymark, should you log it as well? I looked through the forum, but haven't seen a discussion of these issues.
  11. Hi, I just submitted my category, Whispering Giant Sculptures, for peer review last night. I'm really excited about getting this into Waymarking. It was one of my favorite locationless caches. Peter Wolf Toth, the carver of the Whispering Giants, has donated a sculpture to each U.S. state and some additional sculptures outside the United States. Each Whispering Giant depicts a native person of the state or region. These are giant wood carvings and are often displayed in parks, on public buildings' lawns, or at visitor centers. If you would like to see some of these sculptures, please visit the old Trail of the Whispering Giants locationless cache Trail of the Whispering Giants If you have any questions, I will try to answer them in the forum, but I will be out of town this weekend, so I will only have sporadic access. I urge you to vote "yea" on this proposed category.
  12. Thanks for the tips! I will try the Thumb Drive next time. That sounds like a great way to do it.
  13. I've had an Explorist 400 since the beginning of the year, and I really enjoy using it. I think the Geocache managing software is pretty slick and it has allowed me to go paperless for my most recent finds. I'm just running into one problem. How can I transfer batches of current Geocaches to the Explorist when I'm not at my home computer? Most libraries and hotel Internet stations don't allow software to be installed by the user, so if I had the disk with me it wouldn't be much use. Is there a trick for saving files to the SD card? I have a laptop with me while I'm out of town this time, but I couldn't find my disk for the Geocache management software in my rush to leave home yesterday. Is there a place to download it online or an affordable third-party alternative? I'd like to do some caching this week and would appreciate not having to enter a bunch by hand. Any ideas would be appreciated.
  14. We noticed this last time we were at Costco. We've been wanting to upgrade our old Eagle Explorer (it has to be at least 10 years old), and would like something that could download waypoints from the computer and do some mapping. A couple weeks ago, we got to try out my parents new Meridian Platinum. It was unbelievable! It's interface was simple to use and it did everything we wanted. Unfortunately, the price tag on those is way too steep for us. We're on a pretty tight budget right now when it comes to toys, but we thought the price on the Sport Trak Map seemed hard to beat. What is the prevailing opinion on this one? How does it compare to the Meridian in operation?
  15. Where are the locationless cache listings on the website? I used to access them through a link near the top of the page when I did a nearest caches search. Can someone please provide a link to these listings?
  16. I was awfully surprised when I found out that huckleberries were a regional food to the Inland Northwest. Anyway, if you want some interesting huckleberry products, there's a place in Elk River (a very tiny town) called Huckleberry Heaven that has the most huckleberry things I've ever seen. They've got syrup, chocolate, hard candies, barbecue sauce, lotion, and I'm sure I've forgotten a lot of what they had. The best thing is their huckleberry soft serve ice cream. I'm hoping to make a trip out to the Elk Butte Blister Rust Cache soon. Although the cache sounds great, the primary purpose of the trip would be a stop for huckleberry soft-serve along the way.
  17. Thanks for the help! I changed the settings on Outlook express and now it works fine.
  18. I know there has been some discussion of caches being called in as suspicious packages and being examined by a bomb squad. I've read some of the past forum topics about a couple of caches that caused quite a ruckus. Last week, I hunted a semi-local cache that was right next to the fence of an armory. The cache was less than 100 feet from a parking area for military vehicles. This cache was also near a park in such a way that it would be difficult to be discreet about looking for the cache on a nice day when the park was full of people. I enjoyed hunting the cache and I was able to do it on a grey day where my caching partners and I could find it without raising the suspicion of Geomuggles. I'm also worried that this cache may become a black eye for Geocaching in the area if someone decides to call the police about suspicious behavior and a container near the armory. Should I e-mail the cache placer and relay my concerns?
  19. I recently became a charter member and set up a couple of pocket queries. I've received e-mails with the requested information, but I get a message reading "OE removed the following unsafe attachments in your mail" followed by the name of any pocket query files I requested. I use Outlook Express as my e-mail reader, and I have tried receiving my pocket queries both zipped and unzipped. Any ideas on how I can get this to work for me?
  20. Is anyone planning a cache in, trash out event for Moscow, Pullman, Lewiston, or Clarkston? I'd love to attend an event for cache in, trash out day around here, but haven't seen anything posted. I'd be more than willing to help set one up near Moscow, but I'm pretty new to this and could definitely use some help. Let me know if you're in the area and have heard of plans for an event or want to help put an event toghether.
  21. After handling different units in stores and reading the opinions here, I've decided I want to buy a Meridian. The only problem is the one at Outpost.com is only in green, and my wife is fairly set on yellow. Where can I get the best deal on a yellow Meridian?
  22. My wife and I have recently gotten into Geocaching and we've been using an Eagle Explorer that my dad bought around 1996. It's worked fine until today. Today we headed out for a cache and when we turned the Eagle Explorer on, the usual "Do not use GPS as your primary source of navigation! Please press EXIT" screen came on. When we pressed EXIT, nothing happened. We've switched batteries and tried everything we can think of. Does anyone have an idea how to get around this? Is there a reset feature or some way to get it working again? Please help if you know. If no one can help, we may be soliciting advice on affordable GPS units soon . -Jim The TubaTwo
  23. Last month I moved a bug with the goal of visiting all 50 states from Oregon to Idaho. The bug has since moved to Washington with the help of another cacher. I'm heading to Montana next week (another state the bug hasn't visited) and since the cache where the bug now is (almost) on my way, would it be kosher to pick it up and move it to Montana?
