This one was rated at 4/4 which is probably about right (it's a Multi) View from GZ: Mark

A good example would be Simply Paul's 3 Peak Challenge (Which we have done ) You have to climb Snowdon, Scarfel Pike and Ben Nevis in order to get the coords for the final location which is basically a C&D. How should the terrain be calculated for that? Sum of all three? Mean of all three? Max of all three? Mode of all three? Medium of all three? Root mean squared of all three? or 1.5 which it would probably be if it was a trad... Mark

Personally I wouldn't say it's T5. It's a bloomin' long walk but our 10 and 11 year old Labradors managed it OK... Probably more like a T3.5 or 4 because you don't even need to use your hands at any point to pull yourself up Mark

Summer ones in the Summer, Winter ones in the Winter We all have them and have done for years... Mark

Unless your cache requires one of the items *mouse* mentions, don't bother setting it as a T5 All it will do is attract comments saying; "too many stars" "much easier than expected" My preference would be to set T rating lower and attract comments like "tougher than expected - a great challenge" Mark

I (accidentally) left the Etrex on top of the car once and drove for about 12 miles. It was still there when we stopped! No consolation really is it? Mark

As an aside, if/when you do make a fuss about it, don't mention Geocaching Personally, I wouldn't have mentioned it (Geocaching) to the police in the first place. As far as anyone else is concerned you were just exercising your right to use a public right of way... Having to explain what Geocaching is is an unnecessary distraction from the real problem Mark

But just think of all those FTFs you'll be able to dash out for! Maxtrev won't stand a chance Mark

Pet hates when caching?
Delta68 replied to Harry the furry squid's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Consider the following scenarios when a passing muggle spots me rummaging in the undergrowth: Senario 1: Muggle: Have you lost something? Me: Yeah, the dogs' ball Senario 2: Muggle: Have you lost something? Me: Yeah, my hamster ;) That might work! Perhaps I'll give it a trial run sometime to see what the response is Mark -
As long as you have the co-ords in there, it will be reserved for you Mark

I would sooooo like to see photographic proof of this! Here you go! link Luckily we had our son with us this time or it would have been a real struggle (not quite as far above head height as I'd remembered Still high though! ) Mark -

Ah stiles! It irritates me when we embark on a series in which the CO states that it's one of their favourite dog walks only to find oodles of dog proof stiles! Some dog-proof stiles are great fun though. There's a couple on WayDownWest which involved lifting the reluctant Labradors well above head height! You just can't help but laugh at the ridiculousness of the situation Mark -
I recognised that hint straightway! Despite the hint, I seem to recall the co-ords were pretty good on that one!

Likewise caches rated as 5* terrain which aren't! I've only done 1 which actually required special equipment 5/5s are sooo cliché! How about more 4.5/4 or 4.5/3.5 etc caches to make it easier to fill the D/T Grid... Mark -
Pet hates when caching?
Delta68 replied to Harry the furry squid's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Agreed! A cache should be hidden well enough to prevent it being discovered accidentally and a hint added to help the cacher find it without destroying the area or drawing attention. Similarly, when a cache says 'Stealth Required' but has no hint it does not deserve stealth! Mark -
Pet hates when caching?
Delta68 replied to Harry the furry squid's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
No. Currently, if additional caches cannot be found as "standalone" caches they are Mystery/Unknowns/Puzzles The cache listing for a Multi should contain all the information/instructions required to find the final cache If you have to find other caches first then it becomes an Unknown. This guideline was tightened up about 18 months ago There are a few examples of bonus caches which have the co-ordinates of the prerequisite Trads listed as additional waypoints so could have been listed as a Multi Mark -
So long, and thanks for all the fish....

Sorry to hear this, sending our best wishes. Take care Donna & Mark -
We've replaced caches a few times after phoning the CO from GZ I think we replaced one once without contacting the owner first but it was a 1* diff cache which had a history of going missing. Previous 'finders' had signed their names on a potato which just happened to be there!!

We've set a few LBHs Our first one we used a hand cut stamp, two log books and also included an inkpad When we set our (soon to be archived) Abberley Advent[ure] series we managed to buy 24 different Christmas stamps off ebay. Didn't bother with inkpads though as they can just make a yucky mess and most cachers don't bother with the stamps anyway. We also only supplied swaps in the final in an attempt to prevent the stamps from going AWOL...

Repairing screen on Garmin eTrex Vista HCx
Delta68 replied to Confused Chimp's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
I had a mishap with my 10 month old EtrexH a couple of months ago It's unrepairable but Garmin replaced it with a 'reconditioned' unit for £30. Give them a call. The replacement unit looks brand new Edited to add: It will take 15 working days for a replacement to arrive Mark -

Newbie advice on my cache with many dnfs

Personally I don't like vague hints like that - 'near a tree' The GPSr should tell me that much! If a location is very busy you need a precise hint to avoid drawing attention to it Mark -
In the Birmingham area you're quite likely come across little black screw topped pots known locally as aramis144 pots. He handed out dozens of these and an event about a year ago. That's no help to you of course, but I'm pretty sure they are the ones used by Lush shops.... Mark
