Yup! They are the new virtuals: all of the bad parts (the reasons why Virtuals and Locless caches were stopped in the first place) with none of the good bits.
I think the saying 'Be careful what you wish for' applies here!

If you haven't set your Oregon up to do something different - press the power button and then press the massive great big plus sign to make the screen brighter. Spookily, if you press the massive great big minus sign the screen goes darker.
Thanks for that.
Amazingly, I've used the 'Lock Screen' function on that screen many times but never noticed the brightness settings before!
I'd Googled it this morning but the only references to screen brightness were reviews comparing the Oregon to non-touch screen GPSrs
(I was also about to go out so didn't search exhaustively
)

Thanks for the replies!
Running it without the SD card in seems better but that might be because it's reverted to the base map instead of loading the larger OS mapping.
I've done a hard reset as well and put the SD card back in.
It looked OK yesterday but I won't be able to tell until we've used it for a longer period outside
Today there's a NEW problem!
I switched it on this morning and the backlight is incredibly dim. It's fine when plugged into the usd lead so it's not a blown bulb (or whatever these things use)
Any ideas? I can;'t find a 'display brightness' setting...
Thanks

Hopefully they'll go back to "old style" very soon.

Is there a feedback suggestion to vote for that?
Or do they think we'll be contented with the half-hearted date replacement?

THE LOG DATES ARE BACK !!!!!
There you are. An example of a really stupid idea, with no thought given to the consequences, implemented and then removed. One cheer for Groundspeak.
One cheer at the very most!
The dates may be back but they still aren't as nice/clear/easily readable as they were before.
The user specified date format is ignored.

For a few weeks now, the Oregon has become really slow to respond to when switching from screen to screen or... well, anything really, making it virtually unusable.
It uses the UK 1:50K OS mapping and has done for a long time and nothing else has changed on it
To try and speed things up again far I have:
removed any custom maps I had on it
removed all saved track logs
only load 1000 caches
messed around with profiles (removing unnecessary icons)
Foe some reason, removing the memory card and replacing it sometimes fixes it for a few minutes but the problem soon returns
It might be the act of taking the batteries out and putting them back in again which is making it behave for a while
Any suggestions?
Thanks

I really do not know what Groundspeak are playing at
They seem to be going out their way to p*ss everyone off!
I have votes on suggestions which have been 'under review' for months. These are changes that people have actually requested and WANT, and others have backed as a good idea!

Edited to say I found a re-introduced bug but it seems to have gone now

Seriously, get rid of the wasted space avatars on the cache page logs and bring back specific dates. What were you thinking?
Too right!!
This is quite simply THE WORST site update EVER!!
I think that's what they say every time
Oh I don't know; I thought the addition of the menu a few months back was great!
(Even if I did have to customise it with a GreaseMonkey script)

Not forgetting that for one weekend per year, late July usually, the official greeting is:
Arrrrrrrrrh!

Nooooooooo! We should view it as a GOOD thing!
Perhaps it will keep lazy smartphone loggers away from proper caches

I don't know whether the 300 is the same but on the 550 I can do Setup/Map/Data Fields then select the display I need. For geocaching then select Dashboard/Geocaching - Active. Hope this helps.
Yay! That's EXACTLY what was needed!
Thanks

Thanks for the replies etc
I loaded the geocaching.gpf file OK but it didn't have the desired effect.
The problem is that the original Geocaching profile accidentally got deleted and when we created a new one, the map no longer had the geocaching 'dashboard' at the top.
The dashboard thing still doesn't show with DrDick's geocaching.gpf file.
Any ideas how I can get it back?
Running an update form the Garmin site didn't work
Thanks

Yes that does say GPF
You'll find them in the \garmin\profiles folder on the Oregon
Thanks

We have a TB which we only want to go to events. It says on its page:
Current GOALPLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THIS PENCIL IN A CACHE.
Its mission is to travel to events, so please keep it moving!
Yup! You guessed it! It's stuck in yet another cache...

When does a good Puzzle become a bad Puzzle. When nobody can solve it...
Caches are meant to be found...
Indeed!
I've seen far too many puzzle caches which can only be solved with help from the CO (or PAFfing a previous solver/finder)
It is not permissible to set a cache saying: 'Email me for the co-ords'
Unsolvable puzzles amount to exactly the same thing!

Is there a mechanical way of finding how many teams have attended all the UK mega events?? I've done it manually, but may have missed someone.
Steve.
I make it 70 Steve (assuming you mean just Harrogate,Weston, Perth and Swansea
)
Edited to add:
If you include Piratemanai IV in the Mega list that number drops to 18

Was a pleasure to be there at the launch captain..
AaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Yup!
Only 22 cachers/teams have been 'arrrrrrrrrrd enough to attend all four!

After leaving the Welsh Mega Venue, we went in search of a few old caches I had picked out. This one was great fun! Twelve Knights Quarry
We stopped overnight in Cross Hands and had planned to attended the Pen-y-fan event on Monday starting from Neuadd Reservoir and walk the whole loop. When we got closer we decided it was just too foggy to make it worthwhile so continued towards home.
Just down the road we stopped off to find Pip's Falls a very enjoyable cache....
We'll be back another day for pen-y-fan

The new icon looks GREAT!!
Well done!

I've mentioned this before, but when we were doing the Way Down West series last year, the previous 'finders' NMEandPhysgog had only signed ONE log (ok, they stuck a sticker in the book)
They even claimed finds on ones they admitted they couldn't find.
Does it effect anyone else? Well it certainly didn't do much for our morale at the time.
I say Name and Shame.
Anyone who doesn't feel shame shouldn't mind being named!
If they do feel shame, then why cheat?

I've lost a cache
in United Kingdom and Ireland

It's often harder to find your own caches because you think you know where they are.
Email the last finder and ask them to describe exactly where it was when they found it
