Unglued/Loose Rubber Surround On Legend GPSr
RastaDave replied to Techwiz's topic in GPS technology and devices
When the same thing happened to my Garmin Venture & Legend (most likely due to being exposed to high heat for too long), I was recommended some type of epoxy that fixed it right up for just a couple bucks. The sides haven't moved at all since. It was a very fast fix. If memory serves, I found the epoxy at Kmart or some other place like that. -
Wanna bet? The Legend Color C "adventure pack" at target was clearanced out at US$99 a few weeks back. If you can actually find one there these days, I've heard it's down to $49. One of the Forerunners is down to $35 or so. To sum up. They were cheap as sh*t and snapped up pretty fast (mostly ebay resellers).

Tell Your Friends Or Keep It A Secret?
RastaDave replied to ree333's topic in General geocaching topics
I never talk about it at work. I work in the news business and it seems (locally speaking) that the more publicity, the worse it gets. All county forest preserves are off limits to caches unless you have a permit and pay an annual fee. Besides, most reporters I know are a little aloof and would never risk good shoes looking for a Rubbermaid container of quarters, McToys and golf balls. -
I'm glad to see this has spurred more geocaching activity. I must admit it got me off my arse and out to a few caches. Alas, in my quest for a local FTF log, I messed myself up pretty bad while logging the cache (badly sprained ankle and some torn cartilige and other injuries around my rib cage). Anyway, I'm out of the game for a while (not off work, though ) Time for more meds! whoa.....the colors.....the colors......wow......

Injuries Or Accidents While Geocaching?
RastaDave replied to Nerves's topic in General geocaching topics
Put me doen for a severely sprained ankle. (insert weepy music here) Darn that Coin Quest game!! In search of a FTF for the requirements, I decided to beat the local rabid cachers and snag one on the way to work. It was a micro cache hidden in a tree stump about 5 feet off the ground. I looked for this cache the day before, but it turned up missing only hours after it was published. On a side note, somebody left a bag of turds about 10 feet from the cache (garbage can was about 50 feet away). Not funny. I used a sawed-off smaller tree as a makeshift step-stool to climb on top of the stump where there were many hiding places. After fruitlessly searching I decided to get down and search the outer holes in the stump. As I was going down, I wanted to use the same "step-stool tree" that I used to get up. Well, the little bugger shifted and down I went onto the (thankfully) grass. I don't remember hitting my ankle, but it started hurting like a sumbitch right away. Not to be skunked twice on this cache, I hobbled back to the stump and kept looking. I snagged the FTF and left for work (could barely get my foot to work the pedals). Doctor didn't see a break, but the radiologist will get a second look this morning. I might be off the geo-hunt for a while, but I'll be back. -
I used the RTV silicone adhesive as well when this happened to my old Venture. Although, the tube I purchased was for sealing leaks in chimneys. Nonetheless, it worked great. The hardest part was getting the old adhesive off. YUCK!

Garmin Legend Vs. Magellan Explorist 210
RastaDave replied to tech7's topic in GPS technology and devices
Love my Garmin Legend Color. It seems to be more road uses, but is very "geocaching friendly". The battery life it has speaks for itself. -
I doubt you'll get any offers at that price. A Venture is very small compared to what's out there today. I'll bet someone will buy it as a back-up to their primary unit. There's always eBay though. I bought a Venture as my first GPSr for $85 on clearance at Target, used it for a couple months, then sold it on eBay for about $130. There's always a sucker...er....."enthusiastic buyer".

Amazon is running a sweet deal on GPS systems (and most other electronics). My wife got a 5% off email and I used it. I'm sure the promotional code is floating around the internet somewhere (code was something like CUSTAPPRSALE) I got a new Garmin Legend C for $208 with free shipping. Since I just sold my old Legend yesterday, I just have to go a few days without knowing exactly where I am on the planet. Jump on the deal, y'all!

Unless there is a taker, this will be on eBay by the weekend. -
Garmin Legend W/pc Cable, Case And Mapsource
RastaDave replied to RastaDave's topic in GPS technology and devices
You can get them through Garmin's website or there are others available. Others can tell you more in-depth about Eurpean and Asian map software. Garmin does offer this though: -
Garmin Legend used for 63 caches including PC cable and matching carrying case (w/belt clip). DC car adapter is also included (forgot about that). Unit has the latest software and I'll fill it to capacity with all the local maps that the buyer wants (sorry, I have to keep the CDs for my upgrade). $100 SHIPPED. Insurance can be added at your cost. Money orders or Paypal direct pay please. Somebody save me from putting this on eBay! (edited to add car cable)

Want To Buy: Used Garmin Etrex Legend
RastaDave replied to Shambyan's topic in GPS technology and devices
What is your price range? Mine has been used for a little over a year (about 60 caches) and works fine. Since I will be upgrading, I also don't have a use for the case or the car adapter so I'd like to add that if possible. Heck, I'd even load it with as MapSource maps for the area of your choice. Only drawback is the rubber grip slides around. I'll glue it back properly once I research the best way to do it. Make me an offer and spare me an unnecessary eBay experience. I have PayPal if you desire. Thanks! -
Maybe it's just me, but I'd probably find a nice downed tree to rest a little bit and *ahem*....enjoy the view.

(Boulder, CO) -- A good deed has left some Colorado boys richer. In February, three boys from Boulder were playing in a field when they found a duffel bag filled with wet, moldy cash totaling 98-thousand-dollars. The boys turned the money in to authorities. Yesterday, the kids saw that honesty really is the best policy. The boys' families were each presented with a check for nearly 32-thousand-700-dollars. Police suspect the cash was drug money and after six months had gone by with no one claiming it, the money was divided among the three boys. Sounds like this kind of policy is spreading. Here in Winnebago County, the WCFPD up and confiscated all the caches within the Forest Preserves without warning. I notice DuPage county's notice is almost verbatim of the Winnebago County Forest Preserve's policy. Sounds like geocaching on forest preserve property in Northern Illinois is coming to an end.

So who's in with me to create the "Marmaduke Tootsie Rolls" cache?? I'm thinking about making it a 9-stage multi so they'll burn the better part of the day hunting a container of dog turds. I sent a nasty-gram to the WCFPD about the new rules and their enforcement measures. Feel free to do the same: http://www.wcfpd.org/guestbook.htm mailto:wcfpd@wcfpd.org

That's nice. This is about as silly as Rockford's city sticker scam. Just another way to squeeze the taxpayer. Maybe I'll hide a nice cache of dog turds for them to "evaluate".

It's under the rock. Check out the "more logs" part of the cache page. Good idea!

Any music I copy has come from my local library. I have never done napster/kazaa or any other site like that. I have about 4,000 CDs (used to work in radio). About 75% are bands/people you have never heard of. This isn't a Napster substitute. It's a box under a dead tree in a forest somewhere. Sheesh!
-
Maybe I should have said "Any thoughts? Just don't be an a** about it". I doubt Mozart would mind.
-
I've tossed around the idea of placing a cache consisting of a CD case with a dozen or so CD-ROMs with assorted MP3 files on it. Visitors would then take a loaded MP3 disc as long as they left one of their own (genre/artist wouldn't have to be stated, it could be a surprise). I know there are two sides firmly entrenched in their views as far as sharing music goes, but I though this would be a nifty idea (maybe it might turn someone on to some new style of music). Thoughts?

Somewhere in Australia will be close enough. Forgive my novice navigational skills. Thanks!

Is there a web page or function somewhere where I can find the exact opposite side of the planet? I thought it might be an interesting TB destination. Thanks!

Get this. I looked at my maximum speed on my Garmin Legend and it said my maximum speed at some point was 178mph!!!! I know I have a lead foot sometimes, but my Hyundai has never been over 90. Some kind of glitch on the initial lock-on to the satellites?
